Paint it on your iPad or print it and paint on canvas — both are included. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ✨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY Milford Sound — known in Māori as Piopiotahi, "a single Piopio bird" — sits deep inside Fiordland National Park on the southwestern coast of New Zealand's South Island. Fiordland covers 12,607 square kilometres and is the largest of New Zealand's 13 national parks, part of the wider Te Wahipounamu UNESCO World Heritage Site declared in 1990. The fjords were carved out of solid granite by massive glaciers over the last two million years — Milford Sound itself is 15 kilometres long and reaches a depth of 291 metres, with cliffs on either side rising up to 1,200 metres straight out of the water. Māori legend tells that the fjords were shaped by the demigod Tū-te-raki-whānoa, who used a magical adze called Te Hamo to cut the coastline into its jagged shape — starting rough in the south and getting more elegant by the time he reached Milford, which he cut most beautifully of all. Piopiotahi remained hidden from European sailors for centuries because its narrow entrance is nearly invisible from the open sea. Captain Cook sailed past it three times in 1770 and 1773 without ever noticing it was there. It was finally entered by Welsh sealer John Grono in 1812, who named it after his home in Milford Haven, Wales. Milford Sound receives roughly 6.4 metres of rain a year, making it one of the wettest inhabited places on Earth — and after every heavy rain, hundreds of temporary waterfalls stream down the cliffs, some over 1,000 metres tall.
