π¨π Paint the North Shore's most iconic beacon under the northern lights β Split Rock Lighthouse and the aurora borealis
The classic 1910 yellow-brick octagonal lighthouse tower atop the massive diabase cliff glowing luminous cream and coral in the moonlight. A deep indigo night sky filled with swirling ribbons of brilliant emerald green, teal and violet northern lights. Brilliant stars scattered above. Warm gold light glowing from the lighthouse beacon. Silver reflection of the aurora shimmering across Lake Superior. Dark boreal pine forest in silhouette. Split Rock under the aurora is Minnesota at its most magical and most photographed β the postcard shot of the North Star State, and one of the most photographed lighthouses in America. And it is your painting.
Come out after dark. Watch the sky begin to dance. Let the brush find the emerald. Paint it on your iPad or print it and paint on canvas β both are included.

β¨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
Split Rock Lighthouse stands on a 39-metre-tall diabase cliff on the North Shore of Lake Superior, roughly 32 kilometres northeast of the town of Two Harbors in northeastern Minnesota. It was built in direct response to one of the deadliest maritime disasters in Great Lakes history: the great "Mataafa Storm" of November 27β28, 1905, when a single Lake Superior gale sank or damaged 29 ships and killed 36 sailors in less than 48 hours. Six of those ships wrecked on the North Shore near what is now Split Rock. In the aftermath, iron and shipping companies petitioned the U.S. Congress for a lighthouse, and construction began in 1909. The building materials had to be hauled up the sheer 39-metre cliff face by hand-crank hoist β there was no road to the site at the time, and every yellow brick, every roof tile, every kerosene lamp had to be lifted from the deck of a supply ship 39 metres below. The lighthouse was completed in July 1910 and first lit on July 31, 1910. The tower stood 16 metres tall on top of an already-massive cliff, giving the light a focal plane 51 metres above the water β its bivalve Fresnel lens beam could be seen from 35 kilometres out on Lake Superior. Three lighthouse keepers and their families lived at the isolated site, initially reachable only by boat. A road wasn't finished until 1924. The lighthouse operated for 59 years β from 1910 to 1969 β before it was decommissioned. It was transferred to the Minnesota Historical Society in 1971 and is now the centrepiece of Split Rock Lighthouse State Park, one of the most-visited state parks in Minnesota. The North Shore is one of the best places in the continental United States to see the aurora borealis. Lake Superior sits at a latitude far enough north (roughly 47Β°N) that it falls under the auroral oval on nights when solar activity is strong. The Northern Lights appear over Split Rock several dozen nights per year β usually most reliably from October through April, when the nights are longest and darkest. On November 10 of every year β the anniversary of the 1975 sinking of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald, made famous by Gordon Lightfoot's ballad β Split Rock Lighthouse turns on its old beacon in tribute to the 29 sailors lost on that ship and every other mariner claimed by the Great Lakes. Standing at the base of the cliff on a clear autumn night, watching the aurora dance above the yellow-brick tower while Lake Superior stretches black to the horizon, is one of the most quietly awe-inspiring experiences on the North American continent.
