π¨π Paint the tallest man-made monument in America in peak Midwestern autumn β the Gateway Arch in St Louis
The massive 192-metre polished stainless steel arch curving against a deep cobalt sky. Dense hardwood forest of Gateway Arch National Park blazing brilliant crimson, mustard yellow and warm amber autumn colour. Warm coral and gold late afternoon light reflecting off the polished steel. Warm cobblestone plaza at the base. The warm cream St Louis skyline beneath. Warm brown Mississippi River in the middle distance. The Gateway Arch in October is Missouri at its most iconic and most beautiful β the postcard shot of the Show Me State, and the symbol of American westward expansion. And it is your painting.
Ride the tram to the top. Look out across the Mississippi. Let the brush find the silver. Paint it on your iPad or print it and paint on canvas β both are included.

β¨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
The Gateway Arch β officially the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial β stands 192 metres tall on the western bank of the Mississippi River in downtown St Louis, Missouri. It is the tallest man-made monument in the Western Hemisphere, taller than both the Washington Monument (169 metres) and the Statue of Liberty (93 metres including pedestal). Its architect was the Finnish-American modernist Eero Saarinen, one of the greatest designers of the 20th century. Saarinen won the international design competition in 1948 with a radical proposal: a single, elegant, upside-down catenary curve β the shape a hanging chain naturally forms β rendered in polished stainless steel. He designed it as a monument to the westward expansion of the United States, to Thomas Jefferson and the Louisiana Purchase, and to the pioneers who left St Louis heading west in the 19th century. Tragically, Saarinen died of a brain tumour in 1961 at the age of 51 β five years before construction was completed. Building the Gateway Arch was one of the great engineering feats of the 20th century. Construction began on February 12, 1963, and the final piece β a triangular keystone segment lifted between the two rising legs β was set in place on October 28, 1965. Every dimension is precise to the millimetre: the arch is exactly 192 metres wide at the base and exactly 192 metres tall, forming a perfect mathematical catenary. It is constructed of 142 stainless steel sections, each triangular in cross-section, filled with concrete for the lower 90 metres and reinforced steel structure above. The exterior skin is 6.3 mm polished stainless steel β 900 tonnes of it β the largest single stainless steel structure in the world. A unique tram system carries visitors from the base to the observation deck at the top through the hollow interior of each leg β a strange, futuristic ride in tiny egg-shaped capsules that rotate to remain level as they climb the curve. From the top, visitors can see over 50 kilometres in every direction across the Mississippi Valley. The Gateway Arch was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1987 and elevated to Gateway Arch National Park in 2018 β making it America's 60th national park and the smallest by area (91 acres). Standing at the base of the polished steel legs at golden hour in October, with the autumn leaves of Gateway Arch National Park blazing red and gold behind you, is to stand at the exact spot where America's story turned west β 192 metres of American ambition curving overhead against a Missouri sky.
