π¨π€ Paint Montana's most storied ghost town at golden hour β the abandoned main street of Bannack, Old West gold rush capital
Weathered abandoned 1860s Old West main street lined with warm cedar-shingle wooden buildings and false-front storefronts glowing brilliant coral and gold in the last light against a burning amber sky. The historic 1875 Bannack Masonic Lodge and the two-storey Hotel Meade rising along the dusty main street. Warm ochre dirt road stretching down the middle of the ghost town. Distant Beaverhead County hills in soft blue silhouette. Bannack at golden hour is Montana at its most soulful and most storied β the ghost of a gold rush, the first territorial capital, and one of the best-preserved ghost towns in the American West. And it is your painting.
Walk the empty dirt street. Feel the wind through the boarded windows. Let the brush find the ochre. Paint it on your iPad or print it and paint on canvas β both are included.

β¨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
Bannack sits in a lonely, wind-swept valley of Beaverhead County in far southwestern Montana, on the banks of Grasshopper Creek roughly 40 kilometres west of the town of Dillon. It was founded on July 28, 1862, when a Colorado prospector named John White struck placer gold in the creek β the very first significant gold discovery in what would soon become Montana Territory. Within weeks, thousands of miners were pouring into the valley from every direction. By 1863, Bannack was a booming gold rush town of over 3,000 people, home to saloons, hotels, general stores, a jail, a courthouse, several churches, a school, a Masonic Lodge, and one of the earliest professional stage-line stops in the American Northwest. On May 26, 1864, the U.S. Congress created Montana Territory, and Bannack was named its very first territorial capital. The town lost the capital designation a year later to Virginia City (which had struck an even richer gold vein), but Bannack continued mining well into the 20th century. At its peak the town produced over $1.5 billion in gold by today's dollars β a fortune extracted from a single small mountain creek. Bannack is also famous for one of the darkest chapters of Wild West history: the reign of Sheriff Henry Plummer, elected sheriff of Bannack in 1863, who was widely accused of secretly leading a gang of highway robbers known as the "Plummer Gang" or "Innocents." Between 1863 and 1864, the Plummer Gang was blamed for over 100 murders of miners and travellers on the roads around Bannack and Virginia City. In January 1864, a group of local vigilantes called the Montana Vigilantes captured and hanged Plummer and 20 members of his suspected gang without trial β one of the largest extrajudicial killing sprees in American frontier history. Bannack was gradually abandoned as the gold ran out. By 1940 there were only a handful of families left. In 1954 the entire town β over 60 original buildings from the 1860s to 1890s, still standing exactly where they were built β was donated to the State of Montana and turned into Bannack State Park. Nothing was reconstructed; nothing was replaced. Every wooden storefront, every false-front porch, every wallpapered hotel room and every jail cell is original 19th-century construction, slowly weathering under the Big Sky. Bannack is now designated a National Historic Landmark and is considered one of the most authentic and best-preserved ghost towns in the American West. Standing on the empty dirt street of the first capital of Montana at golden hour, with dust drifting in the sunset light and the wind pulling gently at 165-year-old cedar shingles, is to stand at the exact edge of the American frontier.
