π¨π Paint the greatest ballet stage on Earth in the depth of Moscow winter β Bolshoi Theatre in fresh snow
The majestic 1856 Neoclassical theatre with warm cream stone facade, elegant portico of eight massive Ionic classical columns and the famous bronze Apollo Chariot sculpture atop the pediment with four rearing bronze horses rising against a soft pink and pale blue winter dusk sky. Warm cream stone facade glowing warm coral in the winter light. Brilliant white snow covering the roof and the pediment around the Apollo Chariot sculpture. Warm cream Theatre Square in the foreground covered in fresh white snow. Warm gold light glowing warmly from the theatre's tall arched windows onto the snow. Elegant warm gold streetlamps casting warm circles of light on the snow. Warm silhouettes of well-dressed theatre-goers in fur coats hurrying to a performance. Silver frozen Bolshoi Fountain visible in the foreground. Dark bare linden trees dusted with snow. The Bolshoi in winter is Moscow at its most romantic and most timeless β the postcard shot of Russian high culture, and the heart of world ballet for 250 years. And it is your painting.
Cross Theatre Square in the snow. Watch the theatre-goers arrive. Let the brush find the gold. Paint it on your iPad or print it and paint on canvas β both are included.

β¨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
The Bolshoi Theatre stands on Theatre Square (Teatralnaya Ploshchad) in the historic centre of Moscow, roughly 500 metres north of the Kremlin. It is one of the oldest, most prestigious, and most historically significant opera and ballet houses in the entire world. The Bolshoi's origins date back to March 28, 1776, when Empress Catherine the Great granted Prince Pyotr Urusov an imperial licence to establish a professional theatrical company in Moscow β the theatre's founding date. The first theatre building on this site opened in 1780, but was destroyed by fire, as was its 1808 successor. The current magnificent Neoclassical building was designed by architect Albert Kavos and opened on August 20, 1856, in time for the coronation of Tsar Alexander II. The theatre facade features an elegant Ionic portico of eight massive stone columns supporting a triangular pediment. Above the pediment stands the theatre's most iconic feature: the Apollo Chariot β a stunning bronze sculpture completed in 1856 by Peter Klodt depicting the Greek god Apollo (patron god of the arts, music, and poetry) driving a chariot pulled by four rearing bronze horses. The Apollo Chariot has become the definitive symbol of the Bolshoi and appears on the current 100-ruble Russian banknote. The interior main auditorium is one of the most opulent theatre interiors in the world β a six-tier horseshoe-shaped hall in warm crimson-red velvet and warm gold, seating approximately 2,150 people, with tiered gilded balconies, warm parquet floors, and a massive three-tier crystal chandelier hanging from a ceiling painted with a fresco of Apollo and the nine muses. The Bolshoi Ballet β the resident ballet company at the theatre β is one of the oldest ballet companies in the world (founded 1776) and has been the world's leading centre of classical ballet training and performance for over two centuries. The Bolshoi has produced or premiered many of the most famous ballets in the world including Swan Lake (world premiere at the Bolshoi in 1877), Sleeping Beauty (Bolshoi premiere 1899), The Nutcracker (Bolshoi premiere 1919), and Spartacus (world premiere 1968). Legendary Bolshoi dancers over the years have included Anna Pavlova, Maya Plisetskaya, Galina Ulanova, Vladimir Vasiliev, Ekaterina Maximova, Natalia Bessmertnova, Svetlana Zakharova, and countless others whose names are synonymous with the highest achievement of classical ballet. The Bolshoi Opera, founded alongside the ballet company in 1776, is equally distinguished β it premiered many of the greatest Russian operas including Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin (1879), Rimsky-Korsakov's Sadko (1898), and dozens of others. Between 2005 and 2011, the entire Bolshoi Theatre underwent a controversial and extraordinary $700 million restoration project β one of the most expensive restoration projects for any single cultural building in world history β during which the sinking foundations were completely rebuilt, the historic interior was restored to its 1856 appearance, and the acoustics were dramatically improved. The theatre reopened on October 28, 2011, with a gala performance attended by Vladimir Putin, Dmitry Medvedev, and international heads of state. Today the Bolshoi hosts over 250 performances per year on its main historic stage and its second modern New Stage venue. Standing on Theatre Square at 7 PM on a January evening with fresh Moscow snow falling gently and well-dressed theatre-goers in fur coats hurrying past the elegant Ionic columns toward the warm gold interior for a performance of Swan Lake, is to look directly at 250 years of the highest achievement of human artistic culture.
