π¨βοΈ Paint the seat of Russian power in the depth of winter β Moscow Kremlin at dusk in fresh snow
The massive warm cream and coral fortress walls with distinctive 20 warm crimson-red brick Kremlin towers rising against a soft pink and pale blue winter dusk sky. Brilliant white snow completely covering the Kremlin walls, tower tops, cathedral rooftops and the surrounding embankment. Warm coral highlights on the tower brick peeking through the snow. Brilliant crimson-red ruby glass Soviet stars glowing warm ruby at the top of the towers. Warm gold cathedral domes visible above the snow-covered walls catching pink dusk light. Warm yellow Grand Kremlin Palace with warm gold light glowing from windows. Silver ice covering the frozen Moskva River in the foreground. Dark bare trees along the embankment dusted with snow. Warm silhouettes of a few bundled pedestrians. The Kremlin at dusk in winter is Moscow at its most iconic and most enchanted β the postcard shot of Russia itself, and the beating heart of a thousand years of Russian history. And it is your painting.
Walk the frozen embankment. Watch the ruby stars come on. Let the brush find the crimson. Paint it on your iPad or print it and paint on canvas β both are included.

β¨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
The Moscow Kremlin stands on Borovitsky Hill in the geographical and historical centre of Moscow, along the northern bank of the Moskva River. It is the seat of the Russian President, the historic residence of the tsars, the sacred centre of the Russian Orthodox Church, and one of the oldest continuously occupied fortress complexes on Earth. The word "kremlin" (ΠΊΡΠ΅ΠΌΠ»Ρ) is the Russian word for a fortified citadel in a medieval Russian city β many Russian cities had their own kremlin β but "the" Kremlin, unqualified, always means the Moscow Kremlin. The earliest documented settlement on Borovitsky Hill dates to the 11th century, when a wooden Slavic fortress stood on the site. In 1147, Prince Yuri Dolgoruky founded the city of Moscow around this fortress. The first stone walls of the Kremlin were built in 1339 under Grand Prince Ivan I of Moscow (Ivan Kalita), and dramatically expanded and rebuilt in white limestone between 1367 and 1368 under Grand Prince Dmitri Donskoy. But the massive brick fortress that survives today was constructed between 1485 and 1516 under Grand Prince Ivan III (Ivan the Great), who imported Italian Renaissance master architects from northern Italy β including Aristotele Fioravanti of Bologna, Marco Ruffo, Pietro Antonio Solari, and Aloisio the New β to design and build the walls, towers, and interior cathedrals in a spectacular synthesis of Russian Orthodox architectural traditions and Italian Renaissance engineering. The result is one of the most successful cross-cultural architectural collaborations in world history. The Kremlin walls run for a total of 2,235 metres, enclosing an irregular triangular plot of 27.5 hectares, with 20 distinctive brick towers at intervals around the perimeter. The tallest tower β the Spasskaya Tower (Saviour's Tower, 1491) at the eastern gate facing Red Square β rises 71 metres tall, features the famous Kremlin Clock that has chimed the hour since 1852, and is topped by a five-pointed ruby-red glass Soviet star installed in 1937 that has continuously illuminated the sky red since. Five of the tallest Kremlin towers were fitted with the ruby stars in 1937, replacing the original tsarist double-headed eagle emblems that had adorned them since the 15th century. The Kremlin's interior contains an extraordinary ensemble of religious and secular architecture. The Cathedral of the Assumption (1479) β the traditional coronation cathedral where every Russian tsar was crowned from Ivan the Terrible in 1547 to Nicholas II in 1896. The Cathedral of the Archangel (1508) β the traditional burial place of tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St Petersburg in 1712. The Cathedral of the Annunciation (1489) β the personal church of the tsars. The magnificent Ivan the Great Bell Tower (1508) β the tallest building in Moscow for over 400 years (until 1912). The Faceted Chamber (Granovitaya Palata, 1491) β the oldest civil building in Moscow. And the massive Grand Kremlin Palace (1849) β the historic imperial residence, now the ceremonial residence of the Russian President. Adjacent to the Kremlin walls sits Red Square (Krasnaya Ploshchad β literally "Beautiful Square" in Old Russian, though "krasnyi" evolved to also mean "red"), which was originally laid out in the 1490s as the main marketplace of Moscow. Along Red Square's eastern side stands the iconic St Basil's Cathedral (1561). The Moscow Kremlin and Red Square ensemble were together inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1990. Standing on the frozen Moskva embankment at 4 PM on a January afternoon with the Kremlin walls glowing coral through the snow while the five ruby stars begin to burn against the pale pink dusk sky, is to look directly at 900 years of Russian history in one single view.
