π¨βͺ Paint the most iconic silhouette in Russia at first light β St Basil's Cathedral at sunrise
The massive 1561 cathedral with its cluster of nine spectacular candy-striped onion domes in crimson red, warm cobalt blue, brilliant emerald green, canary yellow and warm coral pink rising against a soft pink and pale gold dawn sky. Warm pink and coral light just beginning to touch the tops of the domes and the elegant gold crosses in the first alpenglow. Silver morning mist curling low across the vast warm cobblestone Red Square in the foreground. Warm cream cathedral facade catching the pink dawn light. Warm gold window glow from within the cathedral. Warm cream stone Kremlin walls visible in the middle distance emerging from the mist. Warm cobblestone Red Square catching the first pink light. Warm silhouette of an early morning security guard. St Basil's at sunrise is Russia at its most sacred and most soulful β the postcard shot of Moscow, and the moment Red Square belongs to no one. And it is your painting.
Cross Red Square before the crowds. Watch the domes catch pink. Let the brush find the coral. Paint it on your iPad or print it and paint on canvas β both are included.

β¨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
St Basil's Cathedral β officially the Cathedral of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos on the Moat, and known in Russian as Sobor Vasiliya Blazhennogo β stands at the southern end of Red Square in Moscow, directly beside the Kremlin's Spasskaya Tower and the Moskva River embankment. It is the single most iconic building in all of Russia and one of the most instantly recognisable pieces of architecture on Earth. The cathedral was commissioned by Tsar Ivan IV (Ivan the Terrible) between 1555 and 1561, immediately following his historic 1552 conquest of the Kazan Khanate β one of the most consequential military victories in Russian history, which permanently expanded the Muscovite tsardom eastward into the Volga River region and the Ural mountains. Each of the cathedral's nine domes is dedicated to a specific saint whose feast day fell on a day when Ivan's army won a battle during the Kazan campaign. The traditional attribution names the architects as Postnik Yakovlev and Barma β although historians dispute whether this refers to one person or two, and modern architectural scholars generally accept that the cathedral was designed by a single team of anonymous master builders. According to a legend that has been repeated for four centuries but is now dismissed by most serious historians as apocryphal, Ivan the Terrible was so impressed by the finished cathedral that he had the architects blinded so they could never design anything so beautiful again. There is no documentary evidence for this story from the 16th century itself, and it appears to have been invented in the 17th or 18th century. The cathedral was designed in the Russian Muscovite architectural style β a distinctive Russian synthesis of Byzantine Orthodox church-building traditions, Central Asian Islamic influences (partly inspired by the mosques Ivan's armies had encountered during the Kazan campaign), and native Russian wooden church architecture. The nine onion domes represent the nine chapels dedicated to different saints, with the tallest central dome representing the Cathedral of the Intercession. The distinctive brilliant candy-striped multi-coloured painting of the domes β in crimson, cobalt, emerald green, canary yellow and coral pink β was not applied until much later. The original 1561 domes were plain gold, and only in the 1680s under Tsar Feodor III were the current multicoloured painted patterns first added. The cathedral was renamed "St Basil's Cathedral" after 1588, when Ivan the Terrible's son Tsar Feodor I ordered a small additional 10th chapel to be added to the north side of the cathedral specifically to house the tomb of St Basil the Blessed (Vasiliy Blazhenniy) β a beloved Moscow "holy fool" who had died in 1552 and had reportedly been the only person in Russia who dared to publicly criticise Ivan the Terrible during his life. Napoleon Bonaparte, during his brief 1812 occupation of Moscow, reportedly ordered that the cathedral be dynamited before his retreating army left the city β but the demolition failed when heavy rain extinguished the fuses. In 1929, Stalin's Bolshevik government closed the cathedral, converted it into a museum, and reportedly considered demolishing it entirely to make more room for Soviet military parades on Red Square β until Stalin's architect Pyotr Baranovsky publicly threatened to slit his own throat on the cathedral steps if the demolition proceeded. Baranovsky was arrested and sent to the Gulag for 5 years, but St Basil's was preserved. It was reopened as a functioning Orthodox cathedral in 1990 and inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site alongside the Moscow Kremlin and Red Square in 1990. Standing on the empty warm cobblestone of Red Square at 6:30 AM on an October morning with silver mist curling low across the square while the pink dawn light catches nine multicoloured onion domes rising 60 metres above the frozen ground where Ivan the Terrible watched them being built, is one of the most quietly extraordinary sunrise experiences on Earth.
