π¨π Paint the most famous landmark on the Oregon Trail β Chimney Rock and a lone pioneer wagon at sunset
The massive 91-metre-tall pale cream and warm ochre sandstone spire rising dramatically from the vast North Platte River valley prairie. Blazing brilliant coral and gold in the last light against a burning magenta sky. A lone 19th-century pioneer covered wagon with white canvas top and warm brown ox-team pulling across the prairie in warm silhouette. Warm ochre and gold shortgrass prairie stretching to the horizon. Deep purple shadow settling into the base of the rock. Chimney Rock at sunset is Nebraska at its most iconic and most emotional β the mile-marker of Manifest Destiny, and the postcard shot of the Great Plains. And it is your painting.
Set the wagon brake. Watch the spire catch fire. Let the brush find the coral. Paint it on your iPad or print it and paint on canvas β both are included.

β¨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
Chimney Rock rises 91 metres from the floor of the North Platte River valley in the panhandle of western Nebraska β a single, remarkable spire of Brule Clay, Gering sandstone and volcanic ash tuff standing alone on the shortgrass prairie like a natural obelisk. Geologists estimate the formation is between 33 and 26 million years old β a remnant column of the surrounding Great Plains that has resisted 30 million years of wind and rain erosion where the rest of the landscape has slowly worn away. During the great westward migration of the 19th century, Chimney Rock was the most famous landmark on the entire Oregon Trail, California Trail, Mormon Trail and Pony Express route. From 1841 to 1869, an estimated 400,000 to 500,000 emigrants β many of them travelling by ox-drawn Conestoga and prairie schooner wagons β passed within sight of the rock on their long journey west from Independence, Missouri, to Oregon Territory, California, or Utah. It was the single most-mentioned landmark in surviving pioneer diaries and journals of the era: sighting Chimney Rock meant a wagon train had successfully crossed the plains and was approaching the more difficult mountain crossings ahead. Pioneers travelling roughly 25 to 30 kilometres a day on ox-power could see the rock from over 50 kilometres away β meaning it dominated the horizon for two or three days as travellers slowly approached. Many families carved their names, initials or dates into the soft sandstone at the base β carvings that were still visible into the early 20th century before wind erosion smoothed the surface. In 1956, Chimney Rock was designated a National Historic Site by the U.S. Department of the Interior, and today it appears on the Nebraska state quarter (issued 2006). The landmark is now managed by the Nebraska State Historical Society and hosts a visitor centre run by the Oregon-California Trails Association, which preserves the original diaries and letters of the pioneers who passed by. Standing on the shortgrass prairie at sunset in mid-summer β the exact time of year most Oregon Trail wagon trains passed through β with a wooden covered wagon parked nearby and Chimney Rock blazing coral against the western sky, is to look at 500,000 American stories all at once.
