Despite the name, most of the Strip does not actually lie within the city limits of Las Vegas — it runs through the unincorporated townships of Paradise and Winchester in Clark County, Nevada, which is why the sign at the southern end famously reads "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Nevada" rather than "Welcome to Las Vegas." The area was empty desert until 1941, when the first Strip hotel — the El Rancho Vegas — opened on what was then U.S. Highway 91. Bugsy Siegel's legendary Flamingo Hotel followed in 1946, and by the 1950s and 60s, the Strip was known as the entertainment capital of the world, drawing acts like Sammy Davis Jr., Dean Martin and Wayne Newton to residency shows and the emerging Rat Pack scene. Free performances run every 15–30 minutes from afternoon until midnight, and it has become one of the most-photographed live shows in the world. The Las Vegas Strip today collectively contains 15 of the world's 25 largest hotels by room count, hosts over 42 million visitors a year, and generates over $7 billion in annual gaming revenue.
