π¨π Paint the most photographed drive in New England β the Kancamagus Highway at dawn in peak autumn mist
Warm cream scenic highway winding gracefully through the White Mountains. Dense sugar maples and beeches ablaze in muted crimson red, mustard yellow and warm amber softened by silver morning mist curling low across the roadway. Warm pink and gold dawn light just beginning to touch the tops of the trees. Distant granite White Mountain peaks emerging softly from the fog. Delicate dew glinting on the autumn leaves. The Kanc at dawn is New Hampshire at its most soulful and most photographed β the postcard shot of the Granite State, and one of the most beautiful autumn drives in America. And it is your painting.
Take the truck out at first light. Watch the leaves come out of the mist. Let the brush find the crimson. Paint it on your iPad or print it and paint on canvas β both are included.

β¨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
The Kancamagus Highway β locally known simply as "the Kanc" β is a 55-kilometre stretch of New Hampshire State Route 112 that winds through the heart of the White Mountain National Forest between the towns of Lincoln in the west and Conway in the east. It climbs to a summit elevation of 869 metres at Kancamagus Pass and passes directly through some of the most rugged, unspoiled forest wilderness in the entire American Northeast. The road takes its name from Chief Kancamagus β "The Fearless One" β the third and last leader of the Penacook Confederacy of Indigenous peoples of the northern New England woodlands, who peacefully led his people from 1684 to 1691 before finally moving them north to Canada to escape English colonial pressure. The highway itself is remarkably new: construction began in 1937 as a WPA project connecting the two isolated logging towns of Lincoln and Conway, and it was fully paved and opened as a through route only in 1959. There are no gas stations, no restaurants, no hotels and no cell service along the entire 55-kilometre stretch β the Kanc is deliberately maintained as a wilderness scenic road. In 1996, it was designated an American Scenic Byway by the U.S. Department of Transportation, and in 2005 it was upgraded to a National Scenic Byway β one of only 150 in the country. Every autumn, the highway becomes one of the most-photographed roads in America. New England's hardwood forests are among the most brilliantly coloured autumn landscapes on Earth β a combination of sugar maple (which turns brilliant crimson), red oak (deep russet), yellow birch (golden yellow), beech (bronze), and quaking aspen (bright gold) creates the full spectrum of fall colour that draws millions of "leaf peepers" to New Hampshire each October. The Kanc's peak foliage typically occurs during the first two weeks of October, when β during a typical peak weekend β traffic can back up for 30 kilometres and hotel rooms in Lincoln and Conway sell out months in advance. The road climbs through and passes several other historic landmarks: the Albany Covered Bridge (built 1858), Sabbaday Falls (a 13-metre multi-tier cascade), the Swift River, and multiple scenic overlooks with panoramic views of the Presidential Range including 1,917-metre Mount Washington in the distance. The White Mountain National Forest itself covers over 3,036 square kilometres, established in 1918 as one of the earliest eastern national forests. Driving the Kancamagus at first light on a foggy October morning, watching the mist lift slowly from the sugar maples as the peaks catch the first pink alpenglow, is one of the most quintessentially New England experiences on the continent.
