π¨ποΈ Paint the oldest seaside resort in America - Cape May's Victorian beachfront at sunset with the lighthouse in the distance
A row of iconic pastel Victorian houses along the beachfront glowing warm coral and gold in the last light against a burning magenta sky. The tall white-and-red Cape May Lighthouse rising in soft silhouette across Cape May Point in the middle distance. Brilliant white foam of Atlantic waves rolling onto the warm golden sand beach. Warm boardwalk in the middle distance. Warm silhouettes of beachgoers strolling in the sunset. Cape May at sunset is New Jersey at its most nostalgic and most beautiful β the postcard shot of the New Jersey coast, and the oldest seaside resort in America. And it is your painting.
Kick off the sandals. Walk down Beach Avenue. Let the brush find the coral. Paint it on your iPad or print it and paint on canvas β both are included.

β¨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
Cape May sits at the very southern tip of New Jersey, at the exact spot where the Delaware Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean. It is the oldest seaside resort in the United States β Philadelphians began travelling to Cape May by sailing sloop for summer vacations as early as the 1760s, more than a decade before the American Revolution. By the 1830s, Cape May was drawing wealthy vacationers from Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York by steamboat, and it had become the summer capital of the American upper class. Every U.S. president from John Quincy Adams to Franklin Pierce is documented to have vacationed at Cape May. It is the only city in the entire United States to be designated a National Historic Landmark in its entirety (1976) β every building, every street, every gaslight of the historic district is protected. Cape May's fame comes from a single catastrophic event: on the night of November 8β9, 1878, a massive fire tore through the town and destroyed most of its early 19th-century Federal-style architecture. The entire town had to be rebuilt in the following decade β during the exact peak of the Victorian era. The result is that Cape May today has one of the largest and best-preserved collections of Victorian architecture in the world: over 600 documented Victorian buildings clustered in one small seaside town, mostly in the Stick, Gothic Revival and Second Empire styles. The town is famous for its "gingerbread" β the elaborate wooden decorative trim carved by 1880s local craftsmen and applied to nearly every porch, gable, cornice and tower in town. The Cape May Lighthouse β the white-and-red tower visible across Cape May Point in this scene β was built in 1859 and stands 47 metres tall. It is the third lighthouse to occupy the same site (the first was built in 1823, the second in 1847) and is still an active navigation aid maintained by the U.S. Coast Guard. In addition to its architecture, Cape May is a legendary destination for birdwatchers β Cape May Point sits directly on the Atlantic Flyway migration route, and during autumn migration the point hosts hawks, warblers, monarch butterflies and shorebirds by the tens of thousands. The Cape May Bird Observatory has been tracking migration here since 1976. Congress Hall β the buttercream yellow hotel that appears in many Cape May scenes β has been operating continuously since 1816. Walking Beach Avenue at sunset, with the surf hushing on the sand, the gaslights coming on along the porches, and the Cape May Light beginning to sweep across the water, is one of the most nostalgic experiences you can have on the American East Coast.
