π¨πͺ Paint the oldest continuously inhabited community in the United States - Taos Pueblo at golden hour
The ancient multi-storey adobe complex with its distinctive warm terracotta and coral earth-mud walls. Protruding wooden viga roof beams. Ladder-accessed upper floors. Traditional flat rooftops glowing brilliant coral and gold in the last light against a burning amber sky. The classic Taos-style hornos beehive-shaped adobe bread ovens. Warm ochre earth plaza. Distant Sangre de Cristo mountain peaks in warm purple silhouette. Taos Pueblo at golden hour is New Mexico at its most sacred and most storied β a living community over 1,000 years old, and the oldest continuously inhabited village in America. And it is your painting.
Walk the ancient plaza. Watch the light hit the highest adobe wall. Let the brush find the terracotta. Paint it on your iPad or print it and paint on canvas β both are included.

β¨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
Taos Pueblo sits at the base of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains at an elevation of 2,124 metres in northern New Mexico, roughly 5 kilometres north of the town of Taos. It is the oldest continuously inhabited community in the entire United States β Pueblo people have lived on this exact spot without interruption for approximately 1,000 years, since the community was first established somewhere between 1000 and 1450 AD. The two massive multi-storey adobe structures β Hlauuma (the North House) and Hlaukwima (the South House) β visible on either side of the plaza today were largely built in their present form between 1000 and 1450 AD, though every wall is continuously replastered by hand each year with fresh mud by the Pueblo residents. The buildings are constructed of adobe β a mixture of local New Mexico earth, sand, water and straw β laid up in massive walls up to 1.5 metres thick at the base, and roofed with wooden viga beams cut from the surrounding Carson National Forest. There is no electricity or running water inside the traditional adobe homes; the community deliberately maintains those buildings the way they have been maintained for a millennium. Roughly 150 people still live full-time inside the pueblo, and approximately 1,900 tribal members live within the surrounding Taos Pueblo Nation. Taos Pueblo was one of the sites of the great Pueblo Revolt of August 1680 β the coordinated indigenous uprising led by the San Juan Pueblo religious leader PopΓ© that expelled the Spanish colonial government from New Mexico for 12 years. It remains one of the most successful indigenous rebellions against European colonization in the history of the Americas. Taos Pueblo was also central to the 1970 return of Blue Lake β a sacred lake high in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains that had been seized by the U.S. Forest Service in 1906 β after nearly 70 years of political and legal advocacy by Pueblo leaders. President Nixon signed the return into law in December 1970, and it became one of the very first pieces of federal legislation to return sacred land directly to indigenous people. Taos Pueblo was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992 and a National Historic Landmark in 1965. It is one of only a handful of communities in the world to hold both designations. The San Geronimo Chapel β built in 1850 β sits at one end of the pueblo, alongside the ruins of the older 1619 chapel destroyed during the Pueblo Revolt of 1680 and the Taos Revolt of 1847. Standing quietly at the edge of the plaza at golden hour, watching the last light hit adobe walls that have been continuously replastered for a thousand years, is one of the most humbling landscape experiences you can have in the American Southwest.
