π¨βͺ Paint the tiny stone church beside a milky turquoise glacier lake β Church of the Good Shepherd at Lake Tekapo
The extraordinary 1935 tiny warm cream and warm chestnut-brown stone Anglican church with distinctive small warm cream stone bell tower and warm gold cross standing majestically on the warm brilliant milky turquoise Lake Tekapo shore against a bright cobalt sky with soft white clouds. Warm cream and warm chestnut-brown stone church walls catching brilliant afternoon light in exquisite detail. Warm cream stone bell tower catching brilliant afternoon warmth. Warm gold cross catching brilliant midday sun. Brilliant milky turquoise Lake Tekapo in the foreground catching brilliant afternoon sunlight in extraordinary shimmering turquoise reflections β the famously vivid glacial-blue milky colour caused by suspended rock flour β with rippling surface reflections. Warm ochre-gold Mackenzie Basin tussock grasses scattered along the lake shore catching brilliant afternoon light. Warm cream and warm coral wildflowers dotting the tussock. Dense dark green mountain pines framing the church. Warm silhouettes of Japanese visitors in warm coral and cream jackets taking wedding photos in front of the church. Warm silhouette of a New Zealand tourist family with children on a summer holiday. Warm silhouette of a photographer with warm cream tripod capturing the iconic view. Brilliant white distant snow-capped Southern Alps peaks rising majestically on the horizon catching brilliant midday sun. Warm cream cloud formations scattered dramatically across the cobalt sky. The Church of the Good Shepherd at Lake Tekapo is New Zealand itself β the most-photographed church in the Southern Hemisphere, and the sacred heart of the Mackenzie Basin. And it is your painting.
Stand quietly by the church at noon. Watch the light catch the turquoise. Let the brush find the milky blue. Paint it on your iPad or print it and paint on canvas β both are included.

β¨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
Lake Tekapo sits at the heart of the vast Mackenzie Basin in the central South Island of New Zealand, approximately 225 kilometres southwest of Christchurch and 100 kilometres northeast of the iconic Aoraki / Mount Cook. The lake is one of the most photographed alpine lakes anywhere in New Zealand, and one of the most beloved and most-visited landscape destinations in the entire Mackenzie Basin region. The lake's name derives from the traditional NgΔi Tahu MΔori language name "TakapΕ" β meaning "to leave in a hurry at night" β a name traditionally associated with NgΔi Tahu ancestral migration journeys through the vast Mackenzie Basin during the pre-European settlement era. Lake Tekapo covers a surface area of approximately 87 square kilometres and reaches a maximum depth of 120 metres β making it one of the largest inland lakes anywhere on the South Island. But the extraordinary feature that has made Lake Tekapo internationally famous is not its size β it is the lake's extraordinary distinctive milky turquoise colour. Lake Tekapo's extraordinary milky turquoise colour is caused by extremely fine glacial rock flour suspended in the lake water β microscopic rock particles ground by glacial ice erosion that reflect blue light in an extraordinary way, producing the iconic milky-blue colour that has become synonymous with New Zealand alpine landscape photography. The lake is continuously fed by three glacier-fed rivers flowing directly from the Southern Alps: the Godley River, the Macaulay River, and the Cass River. Together these three glacial rivers deliver an extraordinary continuous supply of freshly-ground glacial rock flour into Lake Tekapo throughout the year, ensuring the lake maintains its extraordinary distinctive milky-turquoise colour permanently in a way that most other glacier-fed alpine lakes on Earth cannot. On the lake's southern shore stands the single most photographed structure anywhere in New Zealand β and one of the most photographed small churches anywhere on Earth: the tiny warm cream and warm chestnut-brown Church of the Good Shepherd. The Church was built in 1935 by local Mackenzie Basin farming families as a memorial chapel commemorating pioneer sheep farmers of the district, and dedicated as an Anglican Church parish chapel. The church was designed by prominent Christchurch architect R.S.D. Harman, and constructed entirely of warm cream and warm chestnut-brown Mackenzie Basin stone quarried locally from the surrounding basin landscape β a design choice that allows the church to visually blend perfectly with the surrounding stone-strewn glacier moraine terrain. The church's most extraordinary architectural feature is its main window β positioned directly behind the altar so that worshippers looking at the altar during services see the extraordinary vista of Lake Tekapo's milky turquoise waters and the distant snow-capped Southern Alps framing the church interior as a continuously-changing living altar backdrop. This extraordinary architectural feature has been described by architectural critics as one of the finest single window designs anywhere in the entire Southern Hemisphere. The tiny warm cream Church of the Good Shepherd has become one of the world's most photographed wedding venues β approximately 400-500 weddings per year are held at the church, drawing wedding parties from Japan, China, South Korea, Taiwan, India, the United States, and across Europe. Standing quietly beside the Church of the Good Shepherd at noon on a warm January afternoon, watching brilliant Southern Hemisphere summer sunshine catch the extraordinary milky turquoise waters of Lake Tekapo while distant snow-capped Southern Alps rise on the western horizon behind a 90-year-old stone chapel that has watched wedding parties from around the world exchange vows in front of its extraordinary lake-view altar, is one of the most peaceful and quietly transcendent alpine lake experiences anywhere on the entire South Pacific archipelago.
