π¨π¦ Paint the eighth wonder of the world from a boat at the base β Milford Sound with Stirling Falls cascading down
The extraordinary UNESCO World Heritage fjord with its distinctive massive warm charcoal-grey and warm chestnut-brown Mitre Peak rising vertically 1,692 metres above the viewer against a bright cobalt sky with soft white clouds. Warm charcoal-grey and warm chestnut-brown Mitre Peak catching brilliant afternoon light in exquisite detail. Dense emerald green Fiordland temperate rainforest cascading down the vertical fjord walls catching brilliant afternoon warmth. Brilliant warm silver-blue Milford Sound water in the foreground catching brilliant afternoon sunlight with rippling surface reflections. Warm silver-white Stirling Falls cascading 155 metres dramatically from the vertical cliff face on the left catching brilliant afternoon light. Brilliant silver-white waterfall spray drifting in the fjord breeze. Warm silhouette of the boat railing in the immediate foreground with warm silhouettes of visitors in warm cream and coral rain jackets pointing up at the falls in awe. Warm silhouette of a Fiordland crested penguin swimming beside the boat. Warm silhouettes of New Zealand fur seals basking on a warm charcoal rocky ledge in the middle distance. Dense green rainforest ferns and warm chestnut Rimu trees clinging to the fjord walls. Distant warm charcoal Darran Mountains visible at the head of the fjord. Milford Sound is New Zealand itself β the eighth wonder of the world, and the sacred crown of Fiordland. And it is your painting.
Take the cruise boat to Stirling Falls at 2 pm. Look straight up. Let the brush find the emerald. Paint it on your iPad or print it and paint on canvas β both are included.

β¨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
Milford Sound β known in traditional NgΔi Tahu MΔori as "Piopiotahi," meaning "the resting place of a single piopio bird" β is a spectacular deep glacial fjord in Fiordland National Park on the southwestern coast of New Zealand's South Island, approximately 290 kilometres southwest of Queenstown and 300 kilometres northwest of Invercargill. The fjord was famously described by writer Rudyard Kipling in 1891 as "the eighth wonder of the world," and has been consistently recognised in modern travel journalism as one of the most spectacular natural landscape features anywhere on Earth. Milford Sound is one of 14 spectacular fjords carved by glacial erosion into the massive granite bedrock of southwestern New Zealand during the last major ice age approximately 20,000 years ago. During peak glaciation, massive glaciers up to 2 kilometres thick flowed slowly from the central Southern Alps westward toward the Tasman Sea coast, carving extraordinarily deep U-shaped fjord valleys directly into the bedrock. When the glaciers finally melted approximately 12,000 years ago, sea water flooded into the abandoned glacial valleys, creating the extraordinary system of 14 spectacular deep-water fjords that today comprise the Fiordland region. Milford Sound is 15 kilometres long, extends from the open Tasman Sea coast eastward into the massive granite mountain wall of Fiordland, and reaches depths of over 500 metres β making it deeper than any lake anywhere in New Zealand. The fjord's most iconic single landscape feature is Mitre Peak (called "Rahotu" in traditional NgΔi Tahu MΔori), a massive granite peak rising vertically 1,692 metres directly out of the still fjord water on the fjord's southern shore. Mitre Peak takes its English name from its extraordinary resemblance to the pointed ceremonial mitre hat worn by Christian archbishops β a name given by early European explorers of the fjord in the 1860s. The peak is one of the highest single mountain faces anywhere on Earth rising directly from tidal sea level β an extraordinary geological achievement that photographs cannot fully convey. Milford Sound's traditional MΔori name β Piopiotahi β reflects a beautiful NgΔi Tahu oral tradition about the extinct native New Zealand piopio songbird. According to NgΔi Tahu tradition, the piopio bird flew to Milford Sound to rest after failing to bring the demigod MΔui back to life from his death at the hands of the goddess Hine-nui-te-pΕ. The MΔori name thus commemorates both the mythological death of MΔui and the tragic modern extinction of the piopio songbird (last documented alive in New Zealand in 1902). The fjord features some of the most extraordinary temperate rainforest ecosystems anywhere in the entire Southern Hemisphere β Fiordland receives approximately 6,800 millimetres of annual rainfall on average, making it one of the wettest inhabited places anywhere on Earth. After heavy rainfall events, hundreds of temporary waterfalls appear cascading down the vertical fjord walls in extraordinary spectacle. The two permanent waterfalls in Milford Sound β Stirling Falls (155 metres tall) and Bowen Falls (162 metres tall) β flow continuously year-round from the massive Fiordland alpine lake catchments above the fjord. The extraordinary Milford Sound wildlife includes New Zealand fur seals (which colonise the fjord's rocky shorelines in colonies of dozens to hundreds), Fiordland crested penguins (one of the world's rarest penguin species, breeding only in Fiordland and small nearby offshore islands), bottlenose dolphins (which regularly visit the fjord in pods of 5-20 individuals), and rare southern right whales (occasional migrating visitors during austral winter months). Fiordland National Park was inscribed alongside three other South Island national parks as the Te WΔhipounamu β South West New Zealand World Heritage Site in 1990 β recognising the extraordinary and irreplaceable ecological, biological, and geological significance of this extraordinary wilderness region. Standing quietly on the deck of a Milford Sound cruise boat at 2:30 PM on a warm January afternoon, watching the boat cruise beneath the extraordinary 155-metre Stirling Falls cascading vertically down the fjord wall as brilliant afternoon sun catches the massive granite face of Mitre Peak rising 1,692 metres directly overhead while New Zealand fur seals bask on a nearby rocky ledge and a rare Fiordland crested penguin surfaces briefly beside the boat, is one of the most spectacular and quietly transcendent natural landscape experiences anywhere on Earth.
