β¨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
Tongariro National Park sits in the heart of the central North Island of New Zealand, approximately 330 kilometres south of Auckland and 340 kilometres north of Wellington. It is New Zealand's oldest national park (established in 1887) and one of only 39 UNESCO sites worldwide with dual World Heritage designation β recognized in 1990 for its outstanding natural values and again in 1993 for its outstanding cultural values (only the second site anywhere on Earth to receive dual designation). The park's dual UNESCO recognition reflects the extraordinary significance of the Tongariro volcanic massif to both natural science and to the MΔori religious tradition of the NgΔti TΕ«wharetoa iwi. The Tongariro volcanic complex consists of three active volcanoes β Mount Tongariro, Mount Ngauruhoe, and Mount Ruapehu β that together form one of the most sacred landscape features in the entire MΔori spiritual tradition. In 1887, the NgΔti TΕ«wharetoa paramount chief Horonuku Te Heuheu Tukino IV formally gifted the three sacred volcanoes to the New Zealand Crown as a permanent national park β specifically to protect the sacred peaks from potential land development and to ensure the mountains would remain protected in perpetuity for both MΔori and non-MΔori New Zealanders. The 1887 gift by Te Heuheu Tukino IV was one of the earliest documented cases of indigenous-led environmental protection anywhere in the world, and represents a foundational moment in New Zealand's cultural history. The most extraordinary landscape feature within Tongariro National Park is the Tongariro Alpine Crossing β a 19.4-kilometre one-day hiking traverse that crosses the volcanic massif from the Mangatepopo car park in the west to the Ketetahi car park in the east. The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is widely considered the finest single-day hiking traverse anywhere in New Zealand, and one of the finest single-day hikes anywhere in the world. Approximately 130,000 hikers complete the Tongariro Alpine Crossing every year. The Crossing route passes several of New Zealand's most photographed volcanic features: the massive Red Crater (an active volcanic vent with warm ochre-red iron-oxide-rich walls), the three brilliant emerald green Emerald Lakes (extraordinary volcanic crater lakes that receive their distinctive emerald colour from dissolved volcanic minerals β primarily sulphur, iron oxide, and calcium carbonate β that scatter light in ways that produce the unique emerald-green colouring), and the massive Blue Lake (a slightly larger crater lake with a distinctive warm cobalt-blue colour). The Emerald Lakes have become one of the most photographed volcanic landscape features anywhere in the entire South Pacific region β appearing in countless international travel photography books, and on countless Instagram feeds every year. Beyond the Emerald Lakes rises the extraordinary massive perfectly conical volcanic silhouette of Mount Ngauruhoe (2,291 metres) β perhaps the single most iconic volcanic silhouette anywhere on Earth. The mountain's extraordinary perfect classical volcanic cone shape (formed by relatively recent volcanic eruption activity between 2,000 and 200 years ago) made it the ideal filming location for the legendary Mount Doom in Peter Jackson's 2001-2003 fantasy film trilogy, filmed in the early 2000s. Peter Jackson used various filming techniques including physical location shooting at Mount Ngauruhoe combined with digital visual effects to create the iconic Mount Doom sequences. Since the release of that film trilogy, Mount Ngauruhoe has become an international pilgrimage destination for fantasy film fans worldwide, with an estimated 40 percent of Tongariro Alpine Crossing hikers now identifying their primary motivation as "fantasy film tourism." Standing quietly at the sacred edge of the emerald crater lakes at 12:30 PM on a warm February afternoon, watching brilliant Australian afternoon sunshine catch the three emerald lakes below the massive perfectly conical silhouette of Mount Doom rising above you, is one of the most spectacular volcanic landscape experiences anywhere in the entire southern hemisphere.
