π¨πΈ Paint the world's most Instagrammed willow tree at pink dawn β #ThatWanakaTree at sunrise
The extraordinary iconic solitary crooked warm chestnut-brown willow tree with distinctive spreading warm emerald and warm ochre foliage growing directly out of the still warm silver-blue Lake Wanaka water against a soft pink and pale gold dawn sky. Warm pink and coral light just beginning to touch the tops of the surrounding Southern Alps peaks in the first alpenglow. The extraordinary iconic solitary warm chestnut-brown willow trunk with distinctive weathered lean rising directly out of the still lake water catching pink dawn light in exquisite detail. Warm emerald and warm ochre-gold willow foliage catching brilliant first pink dawn light. The still warm silver-blue Lake Wanaka in the foreground perfectly reflecting the iconic tree and the pink dawn sky in shimmering coral and silver reflections. Silver morning mist and lake fog curling low across the still lake water creating a magical veil. Warm ochre-gold Otago lakeside tussock grasses in the immediate foreground catching first pink dawn light. Dense dark Southern Alps pine silhouettes framing the composition on the far shoreline emerging from the mist. Distant warm coral snow-capped Southern Alps peaks β including Mount Aspiring β rising in soft silhouette on the horizon catching first pink alpenglow. Warm silhouette of a lone photographer with warm cream tripod on the immediate foreground shore facing the tree. Warm silhouette of a New Zealand paradise duck flying dramatically above the lake catching first pink light. Warm cream cloud formations catching pink dawn warmth. Delicate silver dew glinting on the tussock grasses. #ThatWanakaTree at sunrise is Otago itself β the world's most photographed willow tree, and the sacred lone sentinel of Lake Wanaka. And it is your painting.
Arrive at the lake shore at 5 am. Watch the alpenglow touch the tree. Let the brush find the pink. Paint it on your iPad or print it and paint on canvas β both are included.

β¨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
Wanaka is a small alpine resort town on the shores of Lake Wanaka in the Otago region of New Zealand's South Island, approximately 70 kilometres northeast of Queenstown and 350 kilometres southwest of Christchurch. The town and surrounding Otago Lakes region is one of the most beloved and most-visited landscape destinations in the entire South Island β a spectacular alpine wilderness landscape combining brilliant milky-turquoise glacial lakes, spectacular snow-capped Southern Alps peaks, and extraordinary Southern Hemisphere autumn colour displays. The town's name derives from the traditional NgΔi Tahu MΔori language name "Oanaka" or "WΔnaka" β meaning "the place of learning" or "the sacred place of ancestral knowledge" β a name reflecting the traditional NgΔi Tahu cultural significance of the Lake Wanaka region as a traditional ancestral gathering and cultural teaching site. Lake Wanaka itself covers approximately 192 square kilometres and reaches depths of over 300 metres β making it one of the largest and deepest lakes anywhere on the South Island. The lake is fed continuously by glacial meltwater from the Southern Alps peaks to the west (including Mount Aspiring β one of the most beautiful snow-capped peaks in New Zealand) β producing the extraordinary distinctive warm silver-blue and warm turquoise glacial-fed colour that has made Lake Wanaka one of the most photographed alpine lakes in New Zealand. On the southern shoreline of Lake Wanaka stands the single most-photographed tree anywhere on Earth: the iconic solitary crooked warm chestnut-brown willow tree that has become internationally famous as "#ThatWanakaTree." The extraordinary lone willow tree grows directly out of the shallow lake water approximately 10 metres offshore from the pebbly Roys Bay shoreline β an extraordinary botanical anomaly that has captured international photographic attention for the past two decades. The extraordinary "#ThatWanakaTree" is technically a crack willow (Salix fragilis) β a European willow species native to Britain and continental Europe that was introduced to New Zealand by early 19th-century European settlers. Historical documentation suggests the specific iconic Wanaka willow tree was likely established sometime in the 1930s or 1940s from a fence-post willow cutting driven into the lakebed by a local Wanaka farmer building a lakeside fence line. Over the intervening decades, the willow-post cutting successfully rooted in the shallow lakebed and gradually grew into the extraordinary iconic solitary lakebed tree that is famous today. The extraordinary photogenic combination of the perfectly-isolated lone willow tree rising directly out of the still glacial lake water β with the massive snow-capped Southern Alps peaks catching alpenglow in the background β created the extraordinary iconic photographic composition that made "#ThatWanakaTree" internationally famous during the extraordinary rise of Instagram photography during the 2010s. The Instagram hashtag "#ThatWanakaTree" has been used on over 40,000 individual social media posts since the term first emerged in approximately 2015, and the tree receives over 200,000 individual international visitors every year β including hundreds of professional photographers travelling from around the world specifically to photograph the extraordinary sunrise composition. Standing quietly at the pebble beach at Roys Bay at 5:30 AM on a cool October morning, watching brilliant pink Otago alpenglow touch the top of a lone crack willow tree rising from the still glacial waters of Lake Wanaka while distant Mount Aspiring's snow-capped summit catches first coral dawn light on the far horizon and silver morning mist curls magically low across the mirror-still lake surface, is one of the most peaceful and quietly transcendent alpine dawn experiences anywhere on the entire South Pacific archipelago.
