Its 68 vaulted rooms housed travelling merchants, their animals and their goods on the ancient trade routes crossing the Eastern Mediterranean. Each room had its own fireplace and a small window — modest but functional. At the centre of the courtyard, a small raised octagonal mosque with a fountain for ablutions served the spiritual needs of the travellers below. Over the centuries, Büyük Han served as a police station, a prison and then fell into neglect. In the 1990s it was beautifully restored and today its 68 rooms house artists' workshops, galleries and independent craft shops. The courtyard buzzes with café life. The caravanserai that once sheltered merchants from across the Ottoman world now shelters painters, jewellers and potters. The travellers changed.
