π¨βοΈ Paint the birthplace of flight β the Wright Brothers National Memorial and the Wright Flyer at Kill Devil Hills
The massive 18-metre-tall triangular Art Deco granite pylon monument rising atop Big Kill Devil Hill glowing brilliant coral and gold in the last light against a burning amber sky. A bronze life-size replica of the 1903 Wright Flyer in mid-flight silhouette above the dune. Warm golden sand dunes covered in wispy sea grass. Distant Outer Banks coastline stretching in soft blue silhouette. Warm cream stone tablets at the base of the monument. Kill Devil Hills at golden hour is North Carolina at its most historic and most inspiring β the exact spot where humans learned to fly, and the postcard shot of the Outer Banks. And it is your painting.
Climb the dune. Watch the granite catch fire. Let the brush find the coral. Paint it on your iPad or print it and paint on canvas β both are included.

β¨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
Kill Devil Hills sits on the narrow barrier island chain of the North Carolina Outer Banks, between Kitty Hawk to the north and Nags Head to the south. In the early 1900s, this stretch of coastline was almost completely uninhabited β a wild landscape of shifting sand dunes, shortgrass, and the constant Atlantic wind that made it one of the windiest spots on the entire American East Coast. That wind is exactly why Wilbur and Orville Wright β two bicycle mechanics from Dayton, Ohio β travelled here from 1900 to 1903. They needed strong, steady, predictable wind to test their gliders, and a soft sandy landing surface to survive the inevitable crashes. Kill Devil Hills gave them both. Between 1900 and 1902, the Wright Brothers made hundreds of unpowered gliding flights from Big Kill Devil Hill, testing wing shapes, control surfaces, and pilot positions. Then on the morning of December 17, 1903 β with only five people watching from the surrounding dunes β Orville Wright climbed onto the lower wing of their new powered biplane, released the restraining wire, and flew 37 metres in 12 seconds. It was the first controlled, sustained, powered flight of a heavier-than-air aircraft in the history of the world. Wilbur made a longer 259-metre flight of 59 seconds later that same morning. The Wright Brothers took the world's first powered aircraft home to Dayton that afternoon, and human civilization was never the same. The massive triangular granite pylon that stands atop Big Kill Devil Hill today was designed by New York architects Rodgers & Poor and completed in 1932. It is 18.3 metres tall, constructed of North Carolina Mount Airy white granite, and is topped by an Art Deco beacon that once flashed like an aviation lighthouse. The classical relief panels around the base depict Wright Brothers imagery: gliders, wings, propellers and clouds. The 1932 Memorial features an inscription: "In commemoration of the conquest of the air by the brothers Wilbur and Orville Wright, conceived by genius, achieved by dauntless resolution and unconquerable faith." At the base of the hill, four small granite markers indicate the exact spots where each of the four flights of December 17, 1903 landed. The Wright Brothers National Memorial was designated a National Memorial in 1953 (the 50th anniversary of first flight) and is managed by the U.S. National Park Service. The Wright brothers themselves became one of only 20 pairs of siblings ever together enshrined in the National Aviation Hall of Fame. Standing atop Big Kill Devil Hill at sunset with the granite pylon blazing coral overhead and the exact ground of first flight visible below, is to stand at the very spot where humanity began to fly.
