π¨π€ Paint the world's largest scrap-metal folk art family - the Tin Family on North Dakota's Enchanted Highway
Three towering welded oil-drum sculptures rising against a deep cobalt sky. The 45-foot Papa with his pitchfork raised skyward. The 44-foot Mama with distinctive barbed-wire hair and a basket of flowers. The 23-foot Son wearing a propeller hat and holding a giant lollipop made from a flattened fuel tank. Wheel hubs for eyes. Warm rust and dark grey oxidized steel plates catching brilliant afternoon light. A small family of tourists in warm silhouette at the base looking up for scale. Warm cobblestone visitor pullout in the foreground. Warm ochre shortgrass prairie stretching to the horizon. The Tin Family is North Dakota at its most whimsical and most unforgettable β one lonely retired schoolteacher's fight to save his hometown, standing 45 feet tall on the prairie. And it is your painting.
Pull off Interstate 94. Walk up to the base of Papa. Let the brush find the rust. Paint it on your iPad or print it and paint on canvas β both are included.

β¨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
The Enchanted Highway is a 51-kilometre stretch of two-lane rural road that runs south from Interstate 94 exit 72 at Gladstone, North Dakota, to the tiny town of Regent β population under 200 β in the far southwestern corner of the state. Along that lonely stretch of prairie stand seven monumental scrap-metal sculptures, all conceived, welded, funded, transported and installed by a single man: retired local schoolteacher and principal Gary Greff. The story is one of the most extraordinary folk art projects in American history. In 1989, Greff β a Regent native who had returned home after teaching in other parts of North Dakota β became alarmed at the slow decline of his hometown. Farm consolidation and out-migration had cut the population, closed businesses, and threatened the very existence of the community. Inspired by seeing tourists stop to photograph a monumental hay-bale figure built by a local farmer, and by the misremembered catchphrase from the 1989 film Field of Dreams β "Build it, and they will come" β Greff had a wild idea: if he could line the 32-mile road between Regent and Interstate 94 with the world's largest scrap-metal sculptures, tourists would pull off the highway, drive south, and spend money in Regent. There was one problem. Gary Greff had never welded anything in his life. So he spent a year convincing the local farmers and ranchers β who all knew how to weld β to teach him. In 1991, he unveiled the first sculpture on his new "Enchanted Highway": the Tin Family. Papa stands 45 feet (13.7 metres) tall and is anchored by 16 telephone poles buried deep into the prairie soil to keep him upright in North Dakota's notorious 100-km/h winds. He is constructed entirely from repurposed empty oil drums welded together and painted, and he holds a giant pitchfork raised skyward. Mama stands 44 feet (13.4 metres) tall, made from the same oil drums, but with hair fashioned from real barbed wire, augers for earrings, and wheel hubs for eyes. She holds a basket of prairie flowers. Their Son stands 23 feet (7 metres) tall, wears a propeller hat, and grips a giant lollipop made from a flattened fuel tank. Over the following 30+ years, Greff went on to create six more monumental sculptures along the same highway: Grasshoppers in the Field (1999), Fisherman's Dream (2002), Pheasants on the Prairie (1996), Teddy Rides Again (1993), Deer Crossing (2002), and the world-record-holding Geese in Flight (2001) β recognised by Guinness in 2002 as the world's largest scrap-metal sculpture, weighing 78.8 tonnes and standing 33 metres tall. Greff funded most of the sculptures with his own money and small donations. He drives to each sculpture himself to weld repairs. In 2012, he opened a hotel in Regent's former high school called The Enchanted Castle to give visitors somewhere to stay. Today, thousands of visitors travel the Enchanted Highway each year, and the town of Regent still exists. Gary Greff is now in his 70s. He is still welding. Standing at the base of Papa Tin's 16 telephone poles at midday, looking up 45 feet at a scrap-metal farmer built by one determined retired schoolteacher who taught himself to weld at 40 to save his hometown, is one of the most quietly moving folk-art experiences in all of America.
