π¨π Paint Oregon's most iconic sea stack in the quiet before the world wakes - Haystack Rock at Cannon Beach in morning mist
The massive 71-metre dark basalt sea stack rising in soft silhouette through silver Pacific mist against a soft pink and pale gold dawn sky. Warm pink and coral light just beginning to touch the top of the sea stack. Brilliant white foam of gentle Pacific waves rolling onto the warm golden sand beach. Silver reflections shimmering on the wet sand at low tide. The two smaller "Needles" barely visible emerging from the mist. A lone silhouetted beachcomber walking along the shore. Cannon Beach at dawn is Oregon at its most soulful and most photographed β the postcard shot of the Beaver State coast, and the quiet moment when the Pacific belongs to no one. And it is your painting.
Walk barefoot on the wet sand. Watch the rock come out of the mist. Let the brush find the pink. Paint it on your iPad or print it and paint on canvas β both are included.

β¨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
Haystack Rock rises 71 metres straight out of the Pacific Ocean at Cannon Beach on the northern coast of Oregon, roughly 130 kilometres northwest of Portland. It is one of the tallest intertidal sea stacks in the world β a massive volcanic basalt monolith that stands so close to shore you can walk right up to its base at low tide. The rock formed roughly 15 to 17 million years ago during the Miocene epoch, when the Columbia River Basalt Group volcanic flows poured across what is now the Pacific Northwest. Molten basalt flowed all the way from vents in what is now eastern Washington and Idaho, travelled roughly 500 kilometres westward through ancient river valleys, and hardened at what was then the Pacific coastline. Over the next 15 million years, the softer sedimentary rock around the hardened basalt eroded away, leaving Haystack Rock and its two smaller companions β informally called "The Needles" β standing exposed above the waves. Haystack Rock is a Marine Garden and a federally designated National Wildlife Refuge. During the summer months, it hosts one of the largest tufted puffin colonies on the continental U.S. West Coast β roughly 100 breeding pairs nest in burrows on the upper cliff faces. It is also home to peregrine falcons, common murres, black oystercatchers, pelagic cormorants and Western gulls. At low tide, the intertidal reef around the base of the rock reveals extraordinary tide pools filled with brilliant orange sea stars, deep purple sea urchins, giant green anemones, hermit crabs and nudibranchs β the entire zone is protected and visitors are prohibited from touching or removing any wildlife. Cannon Beach itself is a small artist community of roughly 1,700 permanent residents that was named after a cannon that washed ashore from the wreck of the USS Shark in 1846. The beach was the primary filming location for the 1985 cult classic film The Goonies (the "Goonies Rock" from the movie is Haystack Rock itself). It also appears in Sometimes a Great Notion (1971), Point Break (1991) and countless commercials. National Geographic Traveler magazine has repeatedly named Cannon Beach one of the "100 most beautiful places in the world." Standing barefoot on wet sand at first light on a misty September morning, watching Haystack Rock slowly emerge from the Pacific fog while gentle waves hush behind you and puffins call from the cliffs above, is one of the most quietly perfect experiences on the entire American West Coast.
