π¨ποΈ Paint the birthplace of Western civilisation from the inside β the Parthenon columns rising into the Athenian sky
Massive fluted white and honey marble Doric columns rising majestically toward a strip of brilliant blue Mediterranean sky. Warm shafts of golden sunlight streaming down between them, casting long shadows on the ancient marble floor. Weathered classical carved detail on the entablature above. The temple of Athena Parthenos on the Athenian Acropolis is the single most influential building in Western history β and looking up between its columns is one of the most quietly humbling views on Earth. And it is your painting.
Step between the columns. Look up. Let the brush find the honey. Paint it on your iPad or print it and paint on canvas β both are included.

β¨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
The Parthenon stands on the summit of the Acropolis β the sacred limestone rock rising 156 metres above the modern city of Athens. It was built between 447 and 432 BC during the "Golden Age of Pericles," the peak of classical Athenian democracy and culture, as a temple to Athena Parthenos ("Athena the Virgin"), the patron goddess of the city. The architects were Ictinus and Callicrates, working under the direction of the sculptor Phidias, who was also responsible for the massive lost cult statue of Athena that once stood inside. The temple was constructed entirely from Pentelic marble β over 100,000 tonnes of it β quarried from Mount Pentelicus 16 kilometres away and hauled to the Acropolis by ox cart. The Parthenon is the most perfect surviving example of the Doric order of Greek classical architecture: 46 outer columns each 10.4 metres tall, with the famous "optical refinements" that the Greek architects invented to make the building look perfectly straight to the human eye β the columns actually curve slightly inward and swell in the middle (a technique called entasis), the platform gently domes upward, and no two dimensions are quite what they appear. The mathematics behind the Parthenon influenced every Western building of importance for the next 2,500 years β from the Roman Pantheon to the White House to the British Museum. The temple remained standing and largely intact for over 2,000 years β used successively as a Greek temple, a Byzantine church, a Latin Catholic church during the Crusades, and finally a Turkish Ottoman mosque. Its catastrophic damage came in 1687, during the Great Turkish War, when the Ottomans were using the interior as a gunpowder magazine and a Venetian cannonball scored a direct hit, blowing out the centre of the building. Between 1801 and 1812, the British diplomat Lord Elgin removed about half of the surviving sculptures β the famous "Elgin Marbles" now controversially held by the British Museum, which the Greek government has been requesting the return of for over 40 years. The Acropolis was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987 β the very first one. Standing between the columns on the summit of the sacred rock, looking up at 2,500 years of Pentelic marble and honey-coloured light, is to stand inside the room where the idea of the West was first drawn.
