The village was founded in 1935 by a shark fisherman named Don Joaquín Olivera, who built the first cabana on the sandy point to work the rich waters offshore. For decades it stayed a tiny fishing community of a few dozen families, and every cabana was built by hand from local pine and painted with whatever leftover marine paint was going at the time — which is why no two houses on those dunes are ever quite the same colour. In the 1990s, backpackers on the coastal route between Montevideo and Florianópolis discovered the village, and its slow rhythm, empty beaches and hand-painted cabanas turned it into one of the most beloved bohemian summer spots on the entire Atlantic coast of South America.
