π¨π Paint the most surreal lake in the Andes β Laguna Quilotoa in Ecuador
Impossible turquoise water 400 metres below the rim. Ochre and rust crater walls. Cream mineral bands running through the caldera. A brilliant altiplano sky stretched over 3,900 metres of altitude. Laguna Quilotoa is a perfectly round volcanic crater lake in the Ecuadorian Andes β one of the most photographed and least believed sights in South America. The water really is that colour. And it is your painting.
Lace the boots. Breathe the thin air. Let the brush find the turquoise. Paint it on your iPad or print it and paint on canvas β both are included.

β¨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
Laguna Quilotoa fills the caldera of an ancient volcano that collapsed catastrophically around 1280 AD in one of the most powerful eruptions in Ecuadorian history β a VEI-6 event that spread ash across the northern Andes and was recorded in the oral history of the surrounding Quichua communities. Over the following 800 years, rainwater and mineral-rich springs slowly filled the 250-metre-deep crater, and dissolved sulphur, copper and other volcanic minerals turned the water an unreal shade of turquoise-emerald that shifts through the day with the light. The name "Quilotoa" comes from the Quichua words for "teeth of the moon" β a reference to the jagged crater rim seen from below. Today the caldera is protected within the Reserva EcolΓ³gica Los Ilinizas and forms the highest point of the Quilotoa Loop, one of the most beloved trekking routes in Ecuador. Local Quichua families from the village of Quilotoa on the rim have run the trails, mules and homestays for generations. The lake has no outlet β the water that fills it has been there, slowly turning that colour, since the mountain fell in on itself.
