π¨ποΈ Paint the greatest Gilded Age mansion in America β The Breakers in Newport at golden hour above the Atlantic
The massive 1895 Italian Renaissance Revival Vanderbilt summer cottage with its warm cream limestone facade, ornate carved arches, elegant balustrades and imposing columns glowing brilliant coral and gold in the last light against a burning amber sky. The elegant slate mansard roof catching the sunset. Warm cream terrace stretching toward the deep blue Atlantic Ocean in the middle distance. Brilliant white foam of Atlantic waves crashing against the Cliff Walk rocks below. Dense manicured green lawns and elegant landscaped gardens with topiary framing the composition. Warm silhouettes of visitors on the terrace. The Breakers at golden hour is Rhode Island at its most opulent and most storied β the postcard shot of the Ocean State, and the beating heart of America's Gilded Age. And it is your painting.
Walk the Cliff Walk. Feel the Atlantic wind at the balustrade. Let the brush find the coral. Paint it on your iPad or print it and paint on canvas β both are included.

β¨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
The Breakers stands on Ochre Point in Newport, Rhode Island, on a 13-acre estate overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. It was commissioned by Cornelius Vanderbilt II β the eldest grandson of the railroad and shipping magnate Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt, and at the time the wealthiest man in America β as a summer "cottage" for his family. Vanderbilt hired the celebrated American architect Richard Morris Hunt (also the architect of the Statue of Liberty pedestal and the Metropolitan Museum of Art) and, after the original wooden mansion on the site burned to the ground in 1892, gave Hunt just two years to design and build a fireproof replacement. Construction was completed in 1895 at a total cost of over $7 million β the equivalent of roughly $250 million today β making it the most expensive private house ever built in America at the time. The design is Italian Renaissance Revival, modelled after the great 16th-century palazzos of Genoa and Turin, and specifically inspired by the Villa Turati and the Palazzo Corner della Ca' Grande in Venice. The mansion contains 70 rooms across five floors and covers 65,000 square feet of interior space. The Great Hall β the massive two-storey central atrium β rises 15 metres to a hand-painted 18th-century French Renaissance ceiling and features imported Caen stone walls, marble mosaic floors, gilded carvings, imported alabaster columns, and one of the finest crystal chandelier collections outside a European royal residence. The mansion was built entirely of steel, concrete, brick, marble and imported European limestone β no wooden structural framing β to guarantee it could never burn. The kitchen was one of the most advanced in America at the time, featuring gas ovens, electric refrigeration, and its own dedicated telephone system to the main house. Sadly, Cornelius Vanderbilt II suffered a debilitating stroke shortly after the mansion was completed and died in 1899, having spent only a handful of summers in the finished house. His widow Alice Vanderbilt continued to summer at The Breakers until her death in 1934. In 1948, the Preservation Society of Newport County β recognising the extraordinary architectural significance of the estate β leased and eventually purchased The Breakers from the Vanderbilt family for the token sum of $1, on condition that it be preserved and opened to the public. The Countess Anthony Szechenyi (Gladys Vanderbilt's daughter) continued to live in a portion of the mansion until her death in 2018. Today The Breakers is a National Historic Landmark (1994) and the most-visited attraction in Rhode Island, drawing over 450,000 visitors a year. It stands as the definitive monument to the American Gilded Age β the era of Vanderbilts, Astors, Morgans and Rockefellers β and to a moment when the richest family in America spent seven months of every year in a 70-room seaside cottage on the Atlantic. Standing on the ocean terrace at golden hour, watching the last light hit 5,000 tonnes of imported European limestone above 3-metre Atlantic waves, is to look directly at the peak of American ambition.
