π¨πΈ Paint the crookedest street in the world in peak spring bloom β Lombard Street with a vintage Mustang and cascading hydrangeas
The extraordinary one-block section of Lombard Street "Crookedest Street in the World" with its distinctive series of eight sharp switchback hairpin turns rising steeply above the viewer on the 27-degree grade of Russian Hill against a bright cobalt sky with soft white clouds. Warm cream and coral Victorian and Edwardian San Francisco townhouses lining both sides of the switchback in a spectacular pastel palette of warm coral pink, buttercream yellow, mint green, powder blue and warm cream catching brilliant afternoon light. Warm cobblestone brick-paved switchback street winding dramatically upward in bold receding perspective. Elegant landscaped garden beds between each switchback bursting with brilliant clusters of vibrant crimson red, warm coral pink and fuchsia hydrangeas cascading down the hillside catching brilliant afternoon sunlight. Dense green mature manicured shrubs and Monterey cypresses along the switchback edges. Warm silhouettes of a slow-moving vintage warm crimson-red Ford Mustang cabriolet convertible carefully descending one of the switchbacks. Warm silhouettes of tourists strolling on the pedestrian stairway alongside the road taking photos. Warm cream sidewalk in the foreground. Distant top-of-hill Victorian townhouses visible against the cobalt sky. Lombard Street in spring bloom is San Francisco at its most iconic and most beloved β the postcard shot of California, and the world's most-photographed hillside. And it is your painting.
Walk up the pedestrian stairway. Watch the Mustang descend switchback four. Let the brush find the crimson. Paint it on your iPad or print it and paint on canvas β both are included.

β¨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
Lombard Street is a residential street in San Francisco, California, running for 4 kilometres from the Presidio in the west across the entire northern half of the city to the Embarcadero waterfront in the east. But only one specific single block of Lombard Street β the extraordinary switchback section between Hyde Street and Leavenworth Street on the eastern slope of Russian Hill β has become internationally famous as "the Crookedest Street in the World." This iconic one-block switchback section descends 12 metres of vertical elevation over just 180 metres of horizontal distance, on a steep 27-degree grade that would be impossibly dangerous as a straight street. The eight sharp hairpin turns visitors see today were not part of Lombard Street's original 1850s design. When San Francisco's grid street pattern was first laid out in the 1850s during the Gold Rush era, the city planners designed streets to follow the traditional Roman-inspired grid layout regardless of the underlying terrain. The result was a series of extraordinarily steep straight streets running directly up and down San Francisco's famous hills β some of the steepest urban streets in the world, and dangerous for the horses and horse-drawn carriages that were the primary transportation of the 19th-century city. By the 1920s, with the rise of the automobile as the primary personal transportation of American city life, several of San Francisco's steepest straight streets had become genuinely dangerous β particularly the eastern slope of Russian Hill, where the 27-degree grade of Lombard Street exceeded the safe braking capacity of most 1920s automobiles. In 1922, a Russian Hill property owner named Carl Henry β one of the first residents to install an automobile garage on the block β proposed to city engineers that the dangerous single-grade block be redesigned as a switchback series to reduce the effective grade to a safer 16 percent. City engineer Clyde Healy adopted Henry's proposal and designed the current eight-switchback layout, which was completed in 1922 and which has essentially remained unchanged for the past 100 years. The switchback dramatically reduced the vehicle-navigable grade from 27 percent to just 16 percent β safe for most automobiles of the era while retaining the ability to traverse the steep hillside. The elegant landscaped garden beds between each switchback were added between 1922 and 1926, largely at the initiative of the surrounding Russian Hill homeowners who wanted to beautify the newly transformed street. The hydrangea plantings that give Lombard Street its iconic springtime colour palette were largely established in the 1960s and 1970s and have been continuously maintained by the surrounding property owners as a private beautification effort ever since. The distinctive warm cream, coral pink, buttercream yellow, mint green, and powder blue Victorian and Edwardian townhouses lining both sides of the switchback are among the finest surviving examples of San Francisco Victorian residential architecture. Most were constructed between 1875 and 1910. The three-and-four-storey wood-frame houses with elegant bay windows, decorative wooden trim, and pastel-painted exteriors were part of San Francisco's late-19th-century construction boom that produced the city's signature architectural identity β a style that survived the catastrophic 1906 San Francisco Earthquake and Fire largely because Russian Hill's higher elevation kept the neighbourhood outside the primary fire zone that destroyed most of the flatter central San Francisco neighbourhoods. Lombard Street receives approximately 2 million visitors per year. Vehicle traffic is legally limited to descending only, at a speed of 5 miles per hour, and the pedestrian stairways alongside the switchback have become one of the city's most popular photography destinations. The street's international fame was further amplified by its appearance in countless Hollywood films, including "What's Up, Doc?" (1972), "Bullitt" (1968, though the iconic car chase actually filmed on nearby Taylor Street), and "Herbie Rides Again" (1974). Vintage Ford Mustangs, Cadillacs, Corvettes, and other classic American cars have become the definitive photographic subjects for descending the switchback β a cultural association with the mid-century American automotive golden age that has become inseparable from Lombard Street's identity. Standing on the pedestrian stairway alongside the switchback on a warm May afternoon, watching a bright crimson-red 1965 Ford Mustang convertible carefully navigate the eight hairpin turns while cascading brilliant crimson and coral hydrangeas bloom in the elegant landscaped garden beds and warm cream Victorian townhouses rise on both sides against a bright California sky, is to look directly at 100 years of the most beloved single block of American street engineering.
