Warm chestnut sea turtle head and flippers catching brilliant coral highlights. Warm gold sea turtle eye catching brilliant amber highlights. Brilliant turquoise and emerald green Caribbean water surrounding the turtle catching brilliant warm gold sunlight rays penetrating from above in dramatic god-rays. Brilliant warm coral and warm crimson-orange coral reef branches rising below and around the turtle in vibrant clusters catching warm gold underwater light. Brilliant warm gold and warm chestnut coral fans in the foreground. Brilliant warm crimson and warm coral sea anemones scattered through the reef. Warm silhouettes of a school of brilliant warm cobalt-blue and warm gold tropical fish swimming around the turtle. Warm silhouette of a brilliant warm crimson clownfish nestled in a warm cream sea anemone. Brilliant warm gold sand of the ocean floor visible below catching warm sunlight. Dramatic warm gold underwater sunlight rays penetrating from the surface above creating spectacular vertical light shafts. The sea turtle in the coral reef is the ocean itself β the gentle 100-million-year wanderer of the Caribbean, and one of the most beloved creatures of every warm sea on Earth. And it is your painting.
Dive down at ten metres. Watch her glide past the fan coral. Let the brush find the turquoise. Paint it on your iPad or print it and paint on canvas β both are included.

β¨ A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THIS INCREDIBLE ANIMAL
The green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) is one of the most beloved, most travelled, and most extraordinary marine reptiles anywhere on Earth. Green sea turtles inhabit every major tropical and subtropical ocean basin on the planet β the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans, plus the Mediterranean, Caribbean, Coral, and Sulawesi Seas β making them one of the most geographically widespread reptile species alive today. The species has been essentially unchanged in body plan for approximately 100-150 million years, meaning that the green sea turtles gliding through today's Caribbean coral reefs are the direct evolutionary descendants of essentially identical animals that lived alongside the dinosaurs during the Cretaceous period and survived the mass extinction event of 66 million years ago that killed the non-avian dinosaurs. Adult green sea turtles typically measure 90-120 centimetres in shell length (measured along the top of the carapace) and weigh 110-180 kilograms β with occasional exceptional individuals reaching 200+ kilograms. They are the second-largest of the seven living sea turtle species (only the leatherback sea turtle is larger). Green sea turtles are actually named not for the colour of their shells (which range from warm ochre-brown through warm charcoal-black) but for the distinctive greenish colour of the fatty tissue beneath their shells β a colour that develops from their almost exclusively vegetarian adult diet of seagrasses and marine algae. Green sea turtles are unique among all seven sea turtle species in being the only species to switch from a carnivorous juvenile diet (jellyfish, small crustaceans, marine invertebrates) to an almost exclusively herbivorous adult diet after reaching approximately 25-30 centimetres in shell length. Adult green sea turtles feed primarily on seagrass beds and macro-algae communities in shallow coastal tropical waters, and function as one of the most important herbivorous species in tropical seagrass meadow ecosystems. Their sustained grazing physically maintains the health of seagrass beds by preventing overgrowth and encouraging new blade growth β a keystone ecological role comparable to the role of American bison in maintaining Great Plains grassland ecosystems. Green sea turtles undertake some of the most extraordinary annual migrations of any reptile species anywhere in the world. Individual adult female green sea turtles routinely travel over 2,600 kilometres between their coastal feeding grounds and their specific ancestral nesting beaches. Remarkably, green sea turtles demonstrate near-perfect natal beach fidelity β meaning that adult females return to nest on the exact specific beach where they themselves hatched as juveniles, sometimes 25-35 years earlier. Marine biologists are still working to fully understand the extraordinary geo-magnetic navigational mechanisms that allow green sea turtles to locate their specific ancestral beaches across thousands of kilometres of open ocean travel with essentially perfect precision. The green sea turtle's reproductive biology is one of the most extraordinary and precarious in the entire vertebrate world. Adult females come ashore to nest on tropical sand beaches (typically the same beaches every 2-4 years), dig deep sand nests using their rear flippers, deposit clutches of approximately 100-115 leathery eggs, and then return to the sea β never encountering their offspring. Approximately 60 days later, the entire clutch hatches simultaneously (a phenomenon called "boil"), and the tiny hatchling turtles emerge from the sand, race to the ocean, and immediately swim continuously for approximately 24-72 hours to reach the open ocean and begin their extraordinarily long juvenile phase. The green sea turtle's egg incubation temperature determines the sex of the developing hatchlings β a biological phenomenon called "temperature-dependent sex determination" that is unique to reptiles. Warmer sand temperatures produce predominantly female hatchlings (the pneumonic biologists teach students is "hot chicks and cool dudes"), while cooler sand temperatures produce predominantly male hatchlings. This has become an area of significant conservation concern as global temperatures continue rising: some Australian green sea turtle rookeries are now producing over 99 percent female hatchlings, threatening the long-term reproductive viability of local populations. Green sea turtles have been culturally beloved and honored by coastal peoples worldwide for thousands of years. Hawaiian traditional culture treats the honu (green sea turtle) as one of the most sacred spirit animals β an aumakua (family guardian spirit) that protects Hawaiian families and provides spiritual guidance across generations. Caribbean and Central American traditional peoples have integrated sea turtle imagery into religious and cultural traditions across thousands of years. Modern global tourism markets treat sea turtles as one of the most beloved marine wildlife species β sea turtle sanctuaries in Costa Rica, Hawaii, Australia, and Mexico attract millions of international tourists every year and generate hundreds of millions of dollars in conservation-linked local economies. The green sea turtle's conservation history has been one of gradual recovery. Historical exploitation for turtle meat and turtle shells reduced global green sea turtle populations dramatically between the 1500s and 1970s. The species was listed as endangered under the U.S. Endangered Species Act in 1978, was protected under CITES Appendix I in 1975, and has slowly recovered across most regional populations over the past 45 years. The species is currently classified as Endangered on the IUCN Red List. Ongoing conservation threats include climate change (affecting hatchling sex ratios), plastic pollution (mistaken for jellyfish and consumed by juvenile turtles), coastal beach development (destroying critical nesting habitat), boat strikes, and accidental capture in commercial fishing gear. Modern satellite tracking research has revealed that individual green sea turtles can live over 80 years in the wild β making them one of the longest-lived reptile species anywhere on Earth. Descending 10 metres underwater on a warm Caribbean coral reef at 11 AM on a warm May morning, watching a wild green sea turtle glide effortlessly past brilliant coral branches while warm gold sunlight rays penetrate from the surface above and brilliant turquoise water surrounds every direction, is one of the most quietly magical wildlife experiences anywhere on Earth.
