π¨βοΈ Paint the deepest lake on Earth as clear as glass β Baikal transparent ice at Olkhon Island
The extraordinary crystal-clear frozen surface of Lake Baikal β the world's deepest and oldest lake β stretching to the horizon showing spectacular deep turquoise-blue transparent ice with an intricate network of dramatic warm silver cracks radiating in geometric patterns caused by ice contraction. Deep purple shadow visible in the depths beneath the transparent ice. Brilliant coral and gold light of the setting sun catching the ice surface with warm reflections. Distant Olkhon Island cliffs and warm cream Shaman Rock visible in the middle distance glowing warm coral against a burning amber sky. Warm silhouettes of a lone photographer on the ice for scale. Lake Baikal in winter is Siberia at its most surreal and most spectacular β the postcard shot of the frozen taiga, and a natural wonder of the world you can walk on. And it is your painting.
Walk out onto the ice. Look down through five metres of glass. Let the brush find the turquoise. Paint it on your iPad or print it and paint on canvas β both are included.

β¨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
Lake Baikal sits in a massive rift valley in southeastern Siberia, roughly 4,500 kilometres east of Moscow. It is one of the most extraordinary bodies of water on the planet by almost every measure. Baikal is the deepest lake in the world β reaching 1,642 metres at its deepest point, which is roughly the height of Mount Fuji stacked below the water surface. It is the oldest lake in the world β at approximately 25-30 million years old, Baikal is over 20 times older than most other freshwater lakes on Earth. It is the largest freshwater lake in the world by volume β containing roughly 23,600 cubic kilometres of freshwater, which is more than 20% of all the world's surface freshwater and more than the five North American Great Lakes combined. The lake sits on top of an active continental rift zone β Baikal is slowly widening by roughly 2 centimetres per year as the Eurasian tectonic plate spreads apart beneath it, and it is likely to eventually become a new ocean over the next several tens of millions of years. Baikal was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996. The lake is home to over 2,600 species of plants and animals, roughly two-thirds of which exist nowhere else on Earth β including the Baikal seal (Nerpa), the world's only freshwater seal species. Between January and May every year, Lake Baikal completely freezes over with ice roughly 80-140 centimetres thick β thick enough to safely drive vehicles across. Because Baikal's water is exceptionally pure and low in mineral content, the ice forms in a way that is different from most other frozen lakes on Earth: it freezes crystal-clear, allowing visitors to look straight down through the ice to depths of 40+ metres. When the lake begins to freeze, the water expands and contracts with temperature changes, creating spectacular networks of cracks that criss-cross the ice surface in intricate geometric patterns radiating for hundreds of metres. The dramatic combination of transparent turquoise ice, star-shaped crack patterns, methane bubbles frozen in vertical columns, and giant hummocked ice caves along the shorelines has made Baikal one of the most photographed frozen landscapes in the world. Olkhon Island β the largest island in Lake Baikal at 71 kilometres long and 21 kilometres wide β is one of the most sacred locations in all of Siberia to the Buryat people, the indigenous Mongolic-speaking ethnic group who have lived along Baikal's shores for over 2,000 years. Olkhon is considered one of the five "poles" of the shamanic world in traditional Buryat cosmology, and the island is home to Shaman Rock (Cape Burkhan) β a massive twin-peaked warm cream and rust-red limestone sea stack that has been the most sacred pilgrimage site in Buryat shamanism for centuries. The Buryat name for Lake Baikal is "Dalai-Nor" β "the Sacred Sea." Colourful prayer flags in warm crimson, cobalt, warm gold, warm white and warm green are still tied by pilgrims to the trees and rock outcrops around Shaman Rock as offerings. Standing on the frozen surface of Lake Baikal at Cape Khoboy on the northern tip of Olkhon Island at golden hour in late February, watching 25 million years of freshwater catch the last light through 1.4 metres of crystal-clear turquoise ice while silver cracks radiate to the horizon in every direction, is one of the most extraordinary landscape experiences on the entire planet.
