π¨ποΈ Paint the most beloved valley in the American South β Cades Cove in the Great Smoky Mountains at golden hour
Warm amber pasture stretching between forested blue-green ridges. Weathered log homestead cabins standing where they were built 200 years ago. A small herd of white-tailed deer grazing in the meadow. A tiny white 1800s Methodist church steeple in the distance. Silver mist just beginning to gather in the treetops. And a burning amber sky pouring across the whole valley. Cades Cove is the Great Smoky Mountains at their most peaceful, most nostalgic and most photographed β the beating heart of the most visited national park in America. And it is your painting.
Roll down the window. Watch the deer step into the field. Let the brush find the amber. Paint it on your iPad or print it and paint on canvas β both are included.

β¨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
Great Smoky Mountains National Park straddles the border between North Carolina and Tennessee along the ancient spine of the Appalachian range. It is the single most visited national park in the United States β over 13 million people a year, nearly three times the annual visitation of the Grand Canyon. The mountains take their name from the natural silver-blue haze that hangs over the ridges β a fog produced by the millions of trees releasing volatile organic compounds and moisture into the humid Southern air, a phenomenon the Cherokee called "Shaconage" (place of blue smoke) long before English speakers ever arrived. Cades Cove β the wide green valley in the western part of the park β was originally the ancestral hunting ground of the Cherokee people, cleared and used for game and gathering for centuries. In 1818, the first white European settlers, John Oliver and his wife Lurany, arrived in the cove and homesteaded a small farm at the base of the ridges. Over the following century, roughly 100 families built log cabins, three churches, a working gristmill, schools and split-rail fences in the valley, farming corn and raising cattle in isolation from the outside world. When Great Smoky Mountains National Park was established in 1934, the National Park Service purchased the cove and relocated the families β but crucially, they preserved 19 of the original 19th-century structures rather than tearing them down, including the John Oliver Cabin (still standing exactly where it was built in 1822), the Cades Cove Methodist Church (1902), the Primitive Baptist Church (1887) and the fully functional Cable Mill (1868). Today the 17-kilometre one-way Cades Cove Loop Road takes over half a million visitors each year past those cabins, past herds of white-tailed deer, wild turkeys and black bears grazing openly in the meadow, and past the same split-rail fences the Olivers built with their own hands. The park was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983 and an International Biosphere Reserve. Every rail on every fence, every log in every cabin, and every stone in every chimney of Cades Cove was placed by a real family, in a real century, in a valley that has now belonged to all Americans since 1934.
