πŸŽ¨πŸ¦‰ Paint the golden-eyed ghost of the Arctic tundra β€” a majestic snowy owl perched at Nordic dusk A majestic snowy owl perched on a snow-covered pine branch in a Nordic winter forest at dusk. A large brilliant warm cream-white and warm silver-grey snowy owl with distinctive brilliant warm gold eyes and warm charcoal-grey wing barring perched majestically on the warm chestnut-brown snow-dusted pine branch against a soft pink and pale blue winter dusk sky. Brilliant warm cream-white owl feathers with delicate warm silver-grey barring catching brilliant pink dusk light in exquisite detail with beautiful visible texture. Brilliant warm gold owl eyes catching brilliant amber highlights in exquisite detail. Warm charcoal beak catching coral highlights. Warm chestnut-brown snow-dusted pine branch catching pink dusk light. Brilliant white fresh snow completely covering the pine branch and blanketing the forest floor below catching pink dusk highlights. Dark warm chestnut-brown snow-dusted pine forest framing the composition. Warm cream chimney smoke rising softly from a distant warm chestnut cabin visible catching pink dusk light. Warm silver-blue winter mist curling through the distant forest. Brilliant white fresh snow drifts in gentle waves in the foreground. Distant snow-capped Nordic mountains rising in soft coral silhouette catching pink dusk light. Brilliant white distant winter stars appearing on the horizon. Delicate silver ice crystals glinting on the snow-dusted branches. The snowy owl at dusk is the Nordic winter itself, the golden-eyed messenger of the Arctic, perched in a Scandinavian pine. And it is your painting. Walk into the birch forest at 4 pm. Wait for gold eyes to open. Let the brush find the silver. Paint it on your iPad or print it and paint on canvas β€” both are included. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🎨 WHAT YOU GET βœ”οΈ 5 difficulty levels β€” 16, 24, 48, 72 and 96 colors β€” beginner to expert in one download βœ”οΈ 3 outline versions β€” numbered, blank and preview βœ”οΈ SVG + PDF + PNG file formats β€” print at any size without blurring βœ”οΈ Procreate colour swatches β€” drop the palette straight into your iPad βœ”οΈ HEX-coded colour palette on every page βœ”οΈ Instant digital download β€” nothing shipped ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ✨ A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THIS INCREDIBLE ANIMAL The snowy owl (Bubo scandiacus) is one of the most magnificent, most extraordinary, and most culturally beloved bird species anywhere on Earth. It is one of the largest owl species in the world by body size (only the great grey owl and the Eurasian eagle-owl are meaningfully larger), one of the most northerly-adapted bird species of any avian family, and one of the most instantly recognisable owls anywhere on the planet due to its distinctive brilliant warm cream-white plumage and brilliant warm gold eyes. Adult snowy owls typically measure 52-71 centimetres in body length, have wingspans of approximately 1.3-1.7 metres, and weigh 1.6-2.9 kilograms β€” with adult females typically 20-25 percent larger than adult males. The species is famous for one of the most dramatic sexual dichromatisms of any owl species anywhere in the world: adult males develop increasingly white plumage as they age (the oldest adult males become essentially pure white with only trace amounts of dark barring), while adult females retain distinctive warm charcoal-grey wing and body barring throughout their adult lives. Juvenile birds of both sexes exhibit heavy warm charcoal-grey barring that gradually reduces with successive adult moults across the bird's lifetime. Snowy owls inhabit the Arctic tundra ecosystem across the entire circumpolar Northern Hemisphere β€” from northern Alaska and Canada across Greenland, Iceland, Svalbard, and the entire Russian Arctic to Chukotka. During autumn and winter months, individual birds routinely migrate south into the northern portions of the temperate forest belt of North America and Eurasia, appearing in Ontario, Quebec, New England, the Great Lakes region, Scandinavia, Poland, and northern Ukraine. Every 4-5 years, dramatic irruption events send unusually large numbers of snowy owls far south into the middle latitudes of North America and Europe β€” during the 2013-2014 winter, individual snowy owls were spotted as far south as Bermuda, Florida, Texas, and northern Iberia. Snowy owls are extraordinarily specialised for Arctic tundra hunting. Unlike most owl species, which are strictly nocturnal, snowy owls are almost entirely diurnal β€” hunting during daylight hours in the extreme daylight-and-darkness conditions of the Arctic summer (perpetual daylight) and Arctic winter (perpetual darkness). Their preferred prey species is the lemming β€” a small tundra rodent whose population cycles dramatically over 4-year boom-and-bust cycles. Adult snowy owls consume approximately 3-5 lemmings per day, and can catch an extraordinary 1,600-2,000 lemmings per year. The species has co-evolved so tightly with lemming population cycles that snowy owl reproductive success and geographic distribution track lemming population cycles almost perfectly across the entire Arctic. During lemming population peak years, individual female snowy owls may lay clutches of up to 14 eggs (an extraordinarily large clutch size for a raptor species) and successfully raise entire large broods to independence. During lemming population crash years, most snowy owl pairs skip breeding entirely and migrate south in search of alternative food. Snowy owls demonstrate extraordinarily sophisticated cold-weather adaptations. Their entire body β€” including their feet, ankles, and even the base of their beak β€” is covered in dense insulating feathers to protect against Arctic temperatures as low as minus 45 degrees Celsius. Their body plumage is composed of specialised layered flight feathers over dense down insulation, providing extraordinary thermal insulation while remaining silent during aerial hunting. Their distinctive massive warm gold eyes are proportionally larger relative to body size than the eyes of any other owl species, providing extraordinary low-light vision during Arctic winter's extended twilight periods. Snowy owls hold profound cultural significance across essentially every Northern Hemisphere culture in whose range the species appears. Traditional Inuit religious tradition treats the snowy owl (ukpik in Inuktitut) as one of the most sacred spirit-animals of the Arctic world, and snowy owl feathers are essential elements of traditional Inuit ceremonial regalia. Traditional Sami reindeer-herding peoples of northern Scandinavia treat the snowy owl as one of the sacred spirit-guardians of the reindeer herds. Modern Nordic and Scandinavian folk cultural traditions treat the snowy owl against fresh winter snow as one of the definitive symbols of the beauty of the Nordic winter. Perhaps most famously, the snowy owl has achieved extraordinary global cultural fame through its appearance as a beloved pet owl character in popular fantasy novels and films of the late 1990s and 2000s. That character has introduced generations of children worldwide to snowy owl imagery, and has become one of the most powerful modern cultural symbols of the species. Following the release of those films, sustained demand for pet snowy owls in the illegal wildlife trade briefly threatened wild population stability, a phenomenon that conservation biologists formally documented as "the fictional-owl effect." The snowy owl was reclassified from Least Concern to Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List in 2017 based on documentation of significant population declines across the species' range. Contemporary population estimates place total global wild snowy owl populations at approximately 14,000-28,000 individuals β€” dramatic declines from historical population estimates of over 200,000 individuals in the mid-20th century. Ongoing conservation threats include Arctic climate change (affecting the lemming population cycles on which snowy owl reproduction depends), illegal wildlife trade, and (in some southern wintering areas) collisions with automobiles and power lines during irruption events. Standing quietly at the edge of a Nordic pine forest at 4:15 PM on a cold February afternoon, watching a wild adult snowy owl perched motionless on a snow-dusted pine branch with brilliant warm cream-white plumage catching pink dusk light and brilliant warm gold eyes staring out across the frozen forest, is one of the most quietly magical wildlife experiences anywhere in the entire Northern Hemisphere winter. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ πŸ“₯ HOW IT WORKS 1.
