🎨🌈 Paint the most photographed street in the American South β€” Charleston Rainbow Row at sunset The historic row of thirteen 1740s Georgian Colonial townhouses in their spectacular pastel palette of coral pink, buttercream yellow, mint green, powder blue and lavender glowing brilliant coral and gold in the last light against a burning magenta sky. Warm terracotta clay tile roofs. The iconic 1761 white St Michael's Church steeple visible rising above the Charleston historic district skyline in the middle distance in soft coral silhouette. Warm cobblestone East Bay Street in the foreground. Cascading fuchsia bougainvillea and blooming pink hydrangeas along the wrought-iron balconies. Warm silhouettes of tourists strolling. Rainbow Row at sunset is South Carolina at its most soulful and most beloved β€” the postcard shot of the Palmetto State, and the sweetest street in the American South. And it is your painting. Stroll East Bay at golden hour. Watch the pastels catch fire. Let the brush find the coral. Paint it on your iPad or print it and paint on canvas β€” both are included. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🎨 WHAT YOU GET βœ”οΈ 5 difficulty levels β€” 16, 24, 48, 72 and 96 colors β€” beginner to expert in one download βœ”οΈ 3 outline versions β€” numbered, blank and preview βœ”οΈ SVG + PDF + PNG file formats β€” print at any size without blurring βœ”οΈ Procreate colour swatches β€” drop the palette straight into your iPad βœ”οΈ HEX-coded colour palette on every page βœ”οΈ Instant digital download β€” nothing shipped ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ✨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY Rainbow Row sits along the historic East Bay Street in the French Quarter neighbourhood of Charleston, South Carolina β€” a series of thirteen contiguous Georgian Colonial townhouses stretching from 79 to 107 East Bay Street. The townhouses were built between roughly 1730 and 1760 during Charleston's colonial golden age, when the city was the wealthiest and largest port south of Philadelphia and one of the richest cities per capita in all of British North America. Charleston built its wealth on the export of rice, indigo, and later cotton β€” and merchant families constructed the East Bay Street row houses to serve as both commercial warehouses on the ground floor (with wide doors opening directly onto the wharves) and elegant merchant residences on the upper floors. This mixed use is why the ground floors of Rainbow Row are noticeably taller than the upper floors: they had to accommodate stacked barrels of rice and indigo. After the American Revolution, Charleston's rice economy slowly declined, and by the mid-1800s Rainbow Row had fallen into disrepair. Following the Civil War and the destructive 1886 Charleston earthquake, many of the houses were considered near-derelict and were divided into subdivided tenements. The rescue of Rainbow Row began in 1931, when Judge Lionel Legge and his wife Dorothy Porcher Legge purchased one of the townhouses at 99–101 East Bay Street and began an extraordinary restoration project. Dorothy Legge β€” inspired by pastel-painted Colonial homes she had seen in the West Indies and Bermuda β€” chose a soft pink for the exterior. Over the next 15 years, neighbouring homeowners followed her lead, and by 1945 all thirteen townhouses had been painted in the pastel palette that gives the street its iconic name today. The colours were not historically accurate to the 1700s β€” they were an entirely 20th-century preservation gesture β€” but they saved Rainbow Row from demolition and became one of the most recognizable streetscapes in the United States. The Charleston Historic District that surrounds Rainbow Row was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1960 β€” one of the first major historic districts in the country to receive that designation. St Michael's Episcopal Church, whose iconic white steeple rises above Charleston's skyline, was completed in 1761 and is the oldest surviving church building in Charleston. Its bell tower is 56 metres tall and its bells β€” originally cast in London in 1764 β€” have been captured, recast and returned to St Michael's more times than the bells of any other church in North America, surviving the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Civil War (during which the Confederate government melted them for cannon, and they were later recast from the same metal after the war) and Hurricane Hugo in 1989. Charleston as a whole draws over 7 million visitors a year, and Rainbow Row is one of the most-photographed sites in the American South. Standing on the East Battery seawall at sunset with the harbor behind you, the steeple of St Michael's rising against the burning magenta sky, and thirteen pastel Georgian townhouses glowing coral in the last light of a Charleston day, is one of the sweetest views in the entire American South. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ πŸ“₯ HOW IT WORKS 1.
