β¨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
Mount Rushmore National Memorial is carved into the southeast face of Mount Rushmore, a granite batholith in the Black Hills of southwestern South Dakota, near the town of Keystone. The sculpture depicts, from left to right, four American presidents β George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln β each face standing approximately 18 metres tall from chin to forehead. The memorial was the vision of two men. South Dakota state historian Doane Robinson conceived the original idea in 1923 as a way to draw tourism to the state, initially proposing to carve figures of Western heroes like Lewis and Clark, Buffalo Bill Cody, and Chief Red Cloud into a nearby granite formation called The Needles. Robinson then convinced the famous Danish-American sculptor Gutzon Borglum β already known for his work on the Confederate Memorial at Stone Mountain, Georgia β to take on the project. Borglum, however, felt the granite of The Needles was too fractured and unstable, and proposed instead carving Mount Rushmore itself. He also insisted on national rather than regional subjects: four presidents chosen to represent the birth (Washington), growth (Jefferson), development (Roosevelt), and preservation (Lincoln) of the United States. Congress approved the project in 1925, and formal construction began on October 4, 1927, when President Calvin Coolidge dedicated the site. Between 1927 and 1941, roughly 400 workers used dynamite, jackhammers, and hand chisels to remove approximately 410,000 tonnes of granite from the mountain face. Roughly 90% of the sculpture was carved with precision dynamite blasting β a technique Borglum pioneered specifically for the project, using controlled charges to remove massive amounts of stone while leaving precise contours. The final details were then hand-carved. Working conditions were extremely dangerous β the sculptors and drillers dangled from the mountain face in leather bosun's chairs suspended from cables. Miraculously, in 14 years of construction, not a single worker died. Gutzon Borglum himself died of complications from surgery on March 6, 1941, at the age of 73 β seven months before the memorial was declared complete. His son Lincoln Borglum finished the final details and formally declared the memorial complete on October 31, 1941 (Halloween). Total cost: $989,992.32. The memorial is administered by the U.S. National Park Service and draws over 2 million visitors annually. The Black Hills β known in Lakota as PahΓ‘ SΓ‘pa β are sacred land to the Lakota Sioux people, and the Mount Rushmore memorial is politically controversial for that reason: the U.S. government seized the Black Hills from the Lakota in 1877 in violation of the 1868 Treaty of Fort Laramie, and the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 1980 that the seizure was illegal. The Lakota have never accepted the roughly $1.3 billion in compensation Congress has since offered, and consider the sculpture itself a desecration of a sacred mountain. Nearby, the ongoing Crazy Horse Memorial β begun in 1948 as an explicit response, depicting Lakota war leader TΘaΕ‘ΓΊΕke WitkΓ³ β has been under construction for over 75 years and remains unfinished. Standing on the observation deck of the Grand View Terrace at golden hour on a crisp October day, watching four 18-metre presidents catch the last light against Black Hills forests blazing crimson and gold, is one of the most quietly complicated and unforgettable landscape experiences in the United States.
