π¨βοΈ Paint the church built on the spot Alexander II was assassinated β Savior on Spilled Blood in winter dusk
The majestic 1907 Russian Revival cathedral with its spectacular cluster of nine multicoloured onion domes in warm gold, brilliant emerald green, brilliant cobalt blue, warm coral pink and warm cream against a soft pink and pale blue winter dusk sky. Warm cream cathedral facade with elaborate mosaic decoration and warm coral and cream stone glowing warm coral in the winter light. Brilliant white fresh snow covering the cathedral roof around each dome. Silver frozen Griboyedov Canal in the foreground reflecting the cathedral in shimmering pale coral. Elegant warm crimson ornamental metal fence along the canal. Elegant warm gold lantern lights along the canal beginning to glow. Warm silhouettes of bundled St Petersburg locals in fur coats hurrying along the canal path. Dark bare linden trees dusted with snow framing the composition. Warm gold light glowing softly from the cathedral windows. The Savior on Spilled Blood in winter is Russia at its most tragic and most sacred β the postcard shot of St Petersburg, and a cathedral built on the exact spot where a tsar was murdered. And it is your painting.
Walk the canal at dusk. Watch the domes catch pink. Let the brush find the crimson. Paint it on your iPad or print it and paint on canvas β both are included.

β¨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
The Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood β known in Russian as Sobor Spasa na Krovi β stands on the Griboyedov Canal in the historic centre of St Petersburg, just 300 metres from the Nevsky Prospekt in the heart of the city. It is one of the most instantly recognisable churches in all of Russia, and the story behind its construction is one of the most tragic and consequential in Russian imperial history. On March 13, 1881, Tsar Alexander II β the reformist tsar known to history as "Alexander the Liberator" for his 1861 emancipation of Russia's 23 million serfs β was riding along the Griboyedov Canal in his imperial carriage returning from a Sunday military parade when he was attacked by members of the revolutionary anarchist organisation Narodnaya Volya ("People's Will"). The first assassin, Nikolai Rysakov, threw a bomb underneath the tsar's carriage. Alexander II survived the initial blast unharmed but stepped out of the damaged carriage to check on his injured Cossack guards. As he stood on the canal embankment, a second assassin β Ignaty Grinevitsky β threw a second bomb directly at the tsar's feet. Grinevitsky himself and Alexander II were both mortally wounded. Grinevitsky died at the scene; Alexander II was carried back to the Winter Palace on a bloodstained sledge and died several hours later in his private study, with his son the future Alexander III and grandson the future Nicholas II at his bedside. Alexander II's death fundamentally changed the trajectory of Russian history: his son Alexander III abandoned his father's programme of liberal reforms, adopted a repressive and reactionary conservative policy, and set in motion the reactionary imperial politics that would eventually contribute to the 1917 Russian Revolution just 36 years later. Immediately following his father's death, the new Tsar Alexander III commissioned the construction of an Orthodox cathedral on the exact spot where his father had been assassinated. The cathedral was designed to serve two purposes: as a personal memorial to Alexander II, and as an architectural rejection of the Western European classical style that had dominated St Petersburg architecture since Peter the Great β a return to a distinctively Russian Medieval Revival style. The winning design was submitted by architect Alfred Parland and Archimandrite Ignatiy (Malyshev), and closely emulated the 16th-17th century Russian Muscovite architectural style of churches like St Basil's Cathedral in Moscow β creating a sharp visual contrast with the surrounding Neoclassical buildings of imperial St Petersburg. Construction lasted 24 years, from 1883 to 1907, and cost over 4.6 million rubles (an enormous sum at the time), funded partly by imperial finances and partly by public donations from across the Russian Empire. The cathedral's most extraordinary feature is its interior mosaic decoration. The entire interior β approximately 7,500 square metres of walls, columns, ceilings, and arches β is covered from floor to ceiling in intricate hand-cut mosaic panels depicting biblical scenes, portraits of Russian saints, and elaborate Byzantine geometric ornamentation. Over 8,000 square metres of mosaic tiles were installed by the artistic workshops of Viktor Vasnetsov, Mikhail Nesterov, Mikhail Vrubel, Andrei Ryabushkin, and Nikolai Kharlamov β some of the most celebrated Russian religious artists of the late imperial period β making it one of the largest mosaic collections anywhere in the world. Directly beneath the main altar, preserved untouched from 1881, is a section of the original cobblestone canal embankment stained with the blood of Alexander II β the literal "spilled blood" that gives the cathedral its name. During the Bolshevik era, the cathedral was closed in 1930 and served variously as a potato warehouse, a temporary morgue during the 1941-1944 Siege of Leningrad, and a scenery workshop for the Maly Opera Theatre. It was scheduled for complete demolition several times during the Stalinist period but survived through bureaucratic inaction and eventual protection by later Soviet cultural authorities. Extensive restoration between 1970 and 1997 returned the cathedral to its full 1907 glory, and it reopened as a museum. It was inscribed as part of the "Historic Centre of Saint Petersburg and Related Groups of Monuments" UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1990. Standing on the Griboyedov Canal embankment at 4 PM on a January afternoon with fresh snow falling gently and warm gold lanterns glowing against nine multicoloured onion domes exactly where a tsar was murdered 145 years ago, is one of the most tragically beautiful urban experiences on Earth.
