πŸŽ¨β„οΈ Paint the grandest boulevard of imperial Russia β€” Nevsky Prospekt with Kazan Cathedral in winter sun The historic grand boulevard laid out by Peter the Great in the 1700s stretching in bold perspective toward the horizon with distinctive warm cream, coral pink, buttercream yellow and mint green Neoclassical, Baroque and Empire-style facades of the historic buildings lining both sides against a bright cobalt winter sky. The magnificent 1811 warm cream stone Kazan Cathedral with its distinctive massive 96-column semicircular colonnade sweeping majestically in an elegant arc toward Nevsky Prospekt catching brilliant winter sunlight. Warm cobblestone Nevsky Prospekt in the foreground covered in fresh brilliant white snow. Warm silhouettes of St Petersburg locals in fur coats bundled against the cold walking briskly. Warm silhouettes of a St Petersburg holiday tram passing. Elegant warm gold streetlamps beginning to glow warmly in the afternoon light. Warm silhouettes of Russian babushkas selling warm cream matryoshka dolls at a small stall. Warm cream chimney smoke rising softly from the buildings. Nevsky Prospekt in winter is Russia at its most imperial and most soulful β€” the grandest boulevard of tsarist St Petersburg, and the beating heart of Dostoevsky's city. And it is your painting. Walk the length of the boulevard. Bow to the Kazan Colonnade. Let the brush find the gold. Paint it on your iPad or print it and paint on canvas β€” both are included. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🎨 WHAT YOU GET βœ”οΈ 5 difficulty levels β€” 16, 24, 48, 72 and 96 colors β€” beginner to expert in one download βœ”οΈ 3 outline versions β€” numbered, blank and preview βœ”οΈ SVG + PDF + PNG file formats β€” print at any size without blurring βœ”οΈ Procreate colour swatches β€” drop the palette straight into your iPad βœ”οΈ HEX-coded colour palette on every page βœ”οΈ Instant digital download β€” nothing shipped ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ✨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY Nevsky Prospekt is the main avenue of St Petersburg, running for 4.5 kilometres in a straight line from the Admiralty near the Winter Palace to the Alexander Nevsky Monastery in the east of the city. The boulevard was laid out on the orders of Tsar Peter the Great in 1712 as part of his ambitious project to build an entirely new imperial capital on the marshes at the mouth of the Neva River. Peter had personally selected the site of St Petersburg in 1703 as a "window to the West," intending to move the entire Russian court and government from Moscow (which he considered too Asiatic and backward-looking) to a brand-new city that would be architecturally and culturally aligned with contemporary Western Europe. Nevsky Prospekt was named after Prince Alexander Nevsky, the 13th-century Russian Orthodox saint who defeated the Teutonic Knights on the ice of Lake Peipus in 1242 (canonised in 1547). Over the following century, Nevsky Prospekt became the ceremonial and commercial heart of the entire Russian Empire. Every major Russian imperial architect from the 18th and early 19th centuries β€” Bartolomeo Rastrelli, Andrei Voronikhin, Auguste de Montferrand, Carlo Rossi, Andreyan Zakharov, and Vincenzo Brenna β€” designed important buildings along Nevsky Prospekt, creating one of the most spectacularly consistent Neoclassical and Baroque urban ensembles in Europe. The Kazan Cathedral β€” the visual centrepiece of the boulevard β€” was constructed between 1801 and 1811 by architect Andrei Voronikhin, a former serf who had been granted his freedom to study architecture in Paris and Rome. Tsar Paul I commissioned the cathedral to house the sacred Russian Orthodox icon of Our Lady of Kazan β€” one of the most revered religious icons in all of Russia, believed to have miraculous powers β€” and specifically requested that Voronikhin design the cathedral to explicitly emulate St Peter's Basilica in Rome. Voronikhin's response was to design a distinctive Russian Neoclassical structure with a massive semicircular colonnade of 96 individually carved warm cream Karelian limestone Corinthian columns sweeping majestically outward from the main cathedral entrance in an elegant curved arc, embracing an open plaza directly onto Nevsky Prospekt. The colonnade is 111 metres wide and 15 metres tall and remains one of the finest pieces of Neoclassical architecture in all of Russia. The Kazan Cathedral was the site of a critical moment in Russian imperial history: on August 11, 1812, Field Marshal Prince Mikhail Kutuzov received his commanders' formal blessing here before departing for the campaign against Napoleon Bonaparte's invading Grande ArmΓ©e. Kutuzov's subsequent victory over Napoleon in the Russian campaign of 1812 saved Russia from French conquest and effectively ended Napoleon's imperial ambitions. Kutuzov himself is buried inside the Kazan Cathedral, and captured French battle standards from the 1812 campaign hang from the cathedral walls to this day. Along Nevsky Prospekt, dozens of other historic buildings survive from imperial times: the 1750 Elisseeff Emporium (a spectacular Art Nouveau grocery hall), the 1904 Singer House (the Russian headquarters of the Singer Sewing Machine Company, its distinctive glass dome topped by a bronze globe), the historic Gostiny Dvor market arcade (1785), the Anichkov Palace, the Stroganov Palace (1754), the Kazan Cathedral (1811), and many more. Nevsky Prospekt was the setting for many of the most memorable scenes in 19th-century Russian literature. Fyodor Dostoevsky, Alexander Pushkin, Nikolai Gogol, and Ivan Turgenev all wrote about the boulevard extensively β€” Gogol's 1835 short story "Nevsky Prospekt" is one of the most famous urban prose poems in all of Russian literature. During the Second World War, St Petersburg β€” then Leningrad β€” endured the 872-day Siege of Leningrad (September 1941 to January 1944) by Nazi German and Finnish forces, in which approximately 1 million Leningrad residents died of starvation, cold, and bombardment. Signs still visible on some buildings along Nevsky Prospekt today read (in Russian): "Citizens! During artillery bombardment, this side of the street is more dangerous." The signs have been preserved as historical monuments. St Petersburg is one of the northernmost major cities in the world (at 60 degrees north latitude), and its winters are long and dark β€” December temperatures average -7Β°C, and daylight lasts only 5 hours per day around the winter solstice. Standing on Nevsky Prospekt at 2 PM on a January afternoon watching low golden winter sunlight glance off the 96-column Kazan Cathedral colonnade while Russian babushkas in fur coats and bundled children hurry past in the fresh snow, is one of the most soulful winter urban experiences in all of Russia. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ πŸ“₯ HOW IT WORKS 1.
