β¨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
The Peterhof Palace complex β known in Russian as Petergof and in German as Peterhof (literally "Peter's Court") β stands on the southern shore of the Gulf of Finland, roughly 30 kilometres west of central St Petersburg. It is one of the most magnificent Baroque palace complexes in Europe and often described as "the Russian Versailles" β a reputation Peter the Great himself deliberately cultivated. Peter the Great personally selected the site of Peterhof in 1705, during the height of the Great Northern War against Sweden. Peter had captured the Swedish fortress of Nyenschantz at the mouth of the Neva River in 1703 and immediately began building a new imperial city β St Petersburg β on the marshes. Peterhof was intended as his imperial summer country residence, deliberately designed to rival Versailles, which Peter had personally visited during his 1717 diplomatic tour of France at the invitation of the young Louis XV. Construction began in 1714 under Peter's direct supervision. The first architects were Jean-Baptiste Alexandre Le Blond (a leading French garden designer trained under Louis XIV's chief architect AndrΓ© Le NΓ΄tre) and the Italian Nicola Michetti. Peter himself personally sketched initial designs for many of the fountain systems, walked the site daily during the summer months, and made many of the crucial engineering decisions himself. The Grand Palace was significantly expanded and rebuilt between 1745 and 1755 under Peter's daughter Empress Elizabeth by the Italian architect Bartolomeo Rastrelli (also the architect of the Winter Palace, the Catherine Palace at Tsarskoye Selo, and many other imperial Russian buildings) β the palace visitors see today is largely Rastrelli's work. The Grand Palace features a distinctive warm buttercream yellow and warm cream stone facade with elaborate warm gold rooftop decorative ornamentation, and it stretches approximately 300 metres along the ridge above the Gulf of Finland. Peterhof's most extraordinary feature, however, is not the palace itself but the elaborate garden and fountain system that surrounds it. The complex is divided into the Upper Garden (behind the palace, laid out in strict formal French geometric parterre style) and the Lower Park (in front of the palace and cascading down to the Gulf of Finland, featuring the famous fountain systems). The Grand Cascade β the centrepiece of the entire Peterhof ensemble β consists of 64 individual fountains, 200 individually gilded bronze sculptures, and cascading water channels flowing from the palace terrace down to a central pool, which then feeds a 500-metre-long Sea Canal that runs straight through the Lower Park to the Gulf of Finland. The centrepiece of the Grand Cascade is the massive gilded Samson Fountain (installed 1735), depicting the Biblical figure Samson tearing open the jaws of a lion β a metaphorical monument to Peter the Great's 1709 victory over the Swedish King Charles XII at the Battle of Poltava. Water shoots vertically from the lion's jaws to a height of 21 metres, making it the tallest fountain jet in the entire Peterhof complex. Peterhof's water system operates entirely without pumps. Peter the Great personally designed and engineered an ingenious gravity-based hydraulic system that channels water from natural springs 22 kilometres away in the Ropsha Hills, through a network of aqueducts and reservoirs at higher elevation, providing enough gravity pressure to power over 150 fountains and cascades without any mechanical assistance. This gravity-based hydraulic engineering β Peter designed most of it himself, drawing on ideas he had studied during his diplomatic tour of Western Europe β remains fully operational today, over 300 years after its original completion. Peterhof was catastrophically destroyed during the Second World War. Nazi German forces occupied Peterhof between September 1941 and January 1944, deliberately looted every valuable object they could carry back to Germany (including many gilded bronze sculptures from the Grand Cascade), and then set fire to the Grand Palace before retreating. Photographs taken in 1944 show the palace as a burnt-out shell with almost nothing of the original interior surviving. The entire palace and garden complex was painstakingly reconstructed by Soviet restorers between 1944 and 2003 β a project that spanned nearly six decades and remains one of the largest and most ambitious cultural restoration projects in history. Peterhof was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1990 as part of the "Historic Centre of Saint Petersburg and Related Groups of Monuments." Today it welcomes over 5 million visitors per year. Standing in the formal parterre garden on a June afternoon watching 150 gravity-powered fountains dance in the summer sun while the buttercream Rastrelli Baroque palace catches warm afternoon light behind you, is to look directly at Peter the Great's ambition to make Russia a European imperial power.
