π¨βοΈ Paint the most mystical dawn on Earth β Stonehenge at the summer solstice sunrise
The ancient standing stone circle silhouetted against a burning gold and coral dawn sky. The very first ray of the summer sun streaming brilliant gold directly through the trilithons of the eastern sarsen stones β exactly as the Neolithic builders intended 4,500 years ago. Warm ochre grass in the foreground. Silver morning mist curling low across Salisbury Plain. A scattering of silhouetted figures gathered on the far side of the circle. Stonehenge at the solstice is one of the oldest ceremonial experiences a human being can still have on this planet. And it is your painting.
Come out before dawn. Watch the sun rise through 4,500 years of stone. Let the brush find the gold. Paint it on your iPad or print it and paint on canvas β both are included.

β¨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
Stonehenge stands on the vast open chalk plateau of Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, southwest England β one of the most mysterious and most famous prehistoric monuments on Earth. Construction of the earliest phase of the site β a circular ditch and bank β began around 3000 BC, and the massive standing stones themselves were raised in stages between roughly 2500 and 2000 BC. That makes the stone circle older than the Great Pyramid of Giza, older than the Colosseum by 2,500 years, and older than the birth of the Roman Republic by nearly 2,000 years. There are two main types of stone at Stonehenge: the massive sarsen stones β some weighing up to 25 tonnes and standing nearly 7 metres tall β which were quarried locally in the Marlborough Downs about 30 kilometres away; and the smaller "bluestones" β weighing 2 to 5 tonnes each β which were incredibly transported over 250 kilometres from the Preseli Hills in southwest Wales. How Neolithic people, working entirely with antler picks, rope and wooden rollers, moved multi-tonne bluestones across 250 kilometres of ancient Britain remains one of the great archaeological mysteries. The stones are arranged with astonishing astronomical precision. On the summer solstice β the longest day of the year, around June 21 β the sun rises exactly over the Heel Stone at the far end of the site and its first ray shines directly through the trilithons of the outer sarsen circle and lands on the altar stone at the very centre. On the winter solstice, six months later, the sun sets in perfect alignment through the opposite side. Whoever built Stonehenge β and we still do not know exactly who they were, or precisely why β clearly built it as a solar calendar and a ceremonial gathering place, and clearly cared enough about the two solstices to move mountains across a continent to mark them. Every summer solstice, tens of thousands of people gather at Stonehenge to watch the sun rise through the stones, exactly as their ancestors did over 4,500 years ago. Stonehenge was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986. Standing on Salisbury Plain in the cold dark before dawn on the longest day of the year, waiting for the sun to hit the same stones it has hit for over 4,500 summers, is one of the deepest, quietest experiences left on Earth.
