π¨π Paint one of the New 7 Wonders at first light β the Taj Mahal at sunrise reflected in the pool
Brilliant pink and gold marble catching the first alpenglow. The central dome and four minarets rising against a deep cobalt dawn sky. The long reflecting pool doubling the mausoleum in perfect mirror stillness. Ornamental cypress trees framing the composition. Silver morning mist curling low across the water. The Taj Mahal at sunrise is the most photographed monument to love on Earth β and the postcard shot of India. And it is your painting.
Come out before dawn. Watch the marble catch fire. Let the brush find the pink. Paint it on your iPad or print it and paint on canvas β both are included.

β¨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
The Taj Mahal was commissioned in 1632 by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan as a mausoleum for his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal, who had died the previous year giving birth to their fourteenth child. Shah Jahan and Mumtaz had been inseparable β she travelled with him on military campaigns, advised him on affairs of state, and was, by every account of the time, the great love of his life. Grief-stricken after her death, Shah Jahan resolved to build her the most beautiful tomb on Earth. The Taj Mahal took 22 years to complete. Twenty thousand artisans, stonemasons, calligraphers and craftsmen were assembled from across the Mughal Empire and beyond β including specialists from Persia, the Ottoman Empire, Central Asia and even Europe. Over 1,000 elephants were used to transport the pure white Makrana marble from Rajasthan, more than 300 kilometres away. The mausoleum itself was completed in 1648, and the surrounding gardens, mosque and gatehouses in 1653. The famous inlaid decoration uses 28 different types of semi-precious and precious stones β jasper, jade, crystal, turquoise, lapis lazuli, sapphire, carnelian β set into the marble using the Persian technique known as parchin kari. The four minarets flanking the mausoleum were built with a very slight outward lean so that in the event of a catastrophic earthquake they would fall away from the main tomb rather than crushing it. The entire complex is laid out on a perfectly symmetrical charbagh β the Mughal formal garden divided into four quadrants representing the four rivers of paradise in Islamic tradition. Because the marble is translucent, the Taj Mahal actually changes colour throughout the day: soft pink at dawn, brilliant white at noon, warm gold at sunset, and luminous silver under the full moon. When Shah Jahan died in 1666, his son had him buried beside Mumtaz β the only asymmetric element in the entire perfectly symmetrical complex. The Taj Mahal was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983 and voted one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in 2007. It remains, four centuries after her death, the most beautiful thing anyone has ever built for someone they loved.
