π¨ποΈ Paint the second-highest highway in the world overlooking the Afghan Wakhan β Pamir Highway at sunset
The classic dusty warm cream Pamir Highway winding along the mountain shoulder in the foreground overlooking the vast dramatic Wakhan Valley below. The deep silver-blue Panj River winding dramatically through the valley floor 1,000 metres below with warm ochre and green Wakhan Valley meadow farms and small Pamiri villages visible in the middle distance. Warm silhouettes of Pamiri villages with warm cream stone houses along the river. The massive rust-red, warm ochre and cream Pamir mountains rising on the Tajik side of the valley glowing brilliant coral in the last light against a sky of blazing crimson, magenta and molten orange sunset. The massive Hindu Kush mountains rising majestically on the Afghan side of the border with brilliant white snow-capped peaks catching brilliant coral alpenglow. Warm silhouette of a solo Pamir traveller in warm cream and coral traditional Pamiri robe standing at the highway edge looking down at the valley. The Pamir Highway is Tajikistan at its most vast and most soulful β the Roof of the World, and one of the greatest overland journeys on Earth. And it is your painting.
Pull off the highway at the overlook. Look across at Afghanistan. Let the brush find the crimson. Paint it on your iPad or print it and paint on canvas β both are included.

β¨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
The Pamir Highway β officially designated the M41 β is a 1,252-kilometre high-altitude mountain road that runs across the vast Pamir mountain range of eastern Tajikistan, from the Kyrgyz city of Osh in the north through the Tajik Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region to the Tajik regional capital of Khorog in the south, and onwards to Dushanbe. The highway reaches its highest point at the Ak-Baital Pass at 4,655 metres β making it the second-highest international road in the world (after only the Karakoram Highway between Pakistan and China, which crosses at 4,714 metres). The road was originally constructed by the Soviet Union between 1931 and 1934 as a strategic military supply route to connect the isolated Pamir highlands with the rest of Central Asia and to defend the Soviet border against potential incursions from British India (later Pakistan and Afghanistan) during the era of the "Great Game." For decades the Pamir Highway remained one of the most restricted military roads in the entire Soviet Union β foreigners were completely prohibited from travelling on it. After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 and Tajik independence, the highway gradually opened to international travellers. Today it is considered by adventure motorcyclists, overland cyclists, and 4x4 travellers to be one of the greatest road trips on Earth β comparable to the Karakoram Highway, the Icefields Parkway, and the Pan-American Highway. The southern portion of the Pamir Highway follows the Panj River (also known as the Pyandzh) β the historic border between Tajikistan and Afghanistan for over 400 kilometres. The Wakhan Corridor β a narrow finger of Afghan territory that extends eastward between Tajikistan to the north and Pakistan to the south β begins along the southern portion of the Pamir Highway near the Tajik village of Ishkashim. The Wakhan is one of the most remote and untouched regions on Earth, historically inhabited by the Ismaili Muslim Wakhi people, who are ethno-linguistically related to the Tajik Pamiri people across the border. The Wakhi have maintained continuous cultural and family connections across both sides of the Panj River for over 1,000 years, and travellers on the Pamir Highway can often see Wakhi villages and mud-brick homes on the Afghan side of the river just a few hundred metres away. The Pamir Mountains themselves β nicknamed "the Roof of the World" (Bam-e-Dunia) by ancient Persian travellers β are one of the highest and most remote mountain ranges on Earth. The Pamirs contain several of the highest peaks in the former Soviet Union: Peak Communism (renamed Ismoil Somoni Peak after Tajik independence) at 7,495 metres, Peak Lenin at 7,134 metres, and Peak Korzhenevskaya at 7,105 metres. Fewer than 10,000 international tourists per year travel the full length of the Pamir Highway, making it one of the most remote and least-visited great road journeys in the world. The road is only open in summer β heavy snowfall closes the highest passes between October and April every year. During the Silk Road era (roughly 100 BC to 1400 AD), the trade routes that eventually became the Pamir Highway were a critical northern branch of the ancient Silk Road, carrying Chinese silk, Kashgar horses, Persian carpets and Afghan lapis lazuli across the mountains between China and the Middle East. Standing on a Pamir Highway overlook at 3,200 metres on a September afternoon, watching brilliant crimson sunset light hit the Hindu Kush snow-capped peaks across the Panj River in Afghanistan while a Pamiri woman in coral robes tends her sheep on the Tajik side of the valley, is to look directly at the Roof of the World.
