Tiger beetles are considered some of the fastest runners in the animal kingdom relative to body size — some species cover ground so quickly their eyes can't process enough light to track prey, forcing them to run in short bursts and pause to re-aim. Their oversized, sickle-shaped mandibles aren't just for show either — tiger beetle larvae are ambush predators too, waiting in vertical burrows to snap up anything that walks past. The metallic green, blue, and copper sheen isn't pigment at all — it comes from microscopic structures in the exoskeleton that bend light, the same principle behind the shimmer on a soap bubble or a beetle's cousin, the jewel scarab. Entomologists have used tiger beetles for decades as an indicator species, since they're sensitive enough to habitat changes that a healthy tiger beetle population usually means a healthy ecosystem around it.
