β¨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
Ashgabat is the capital city of Turkmenistan, sitting on the northern edge of the vast Karakum Desert at the foot of the Kopet Dag mountain range along the border with Iran. The city was founded in 1881 as a small Russian Imperial military outpost on the ancient Silk Road caravan route that had run through the Merv oasis for over 2,500 years. Then in 1948, a catastrophic 7.3-magnitude earthquake struck at 2:17 AM on October 6th, completely destroying the entire city and killing an estimated 110,000 people β roughly two-thirds of Ashgabat's population at the time β in what remains one of the deadliest earthquakes in Soviet history. The city was rebuilt during the Soviet era in a functional Brutalist style, but everything changed after Turkmen independence in 1991. Beginning in the early 2000s, under Presidents Saparmurat Niyazov and Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov, Turkmenistan undertook one of the most ambitious and unusual urban transformations in modern history. The government commissioned dozens of massive government buildings, ministries, residential apartment towers, monuments and public spaces designed by Turkish architectural firms β with one strict specification: all major buildings would be clad entirely in imported white Carrara marble sourced primarily from Italian quarries. Between 2003 and 2018, over 543 major white marble buildings were constructed across central Ashgabat, and in 2013 the city was officially awarded the Guinness World Record for the highest concentration of white marble buildings in the world β a record it still holds. The centrepiece landmarks include: the 2011 Independence Monument β a 118-metre-tall white marble column topped by a golden five-pointed star; the 2011 Bagt KΓΆΕgi Wedding Palace β a striking 185-metre-tall building shaped as three stacked eight-pointed Turkmen carpet-star motifs supporting a golden globe of Turkmenistan; the 2011 Neutrality Monument β a 95-metre tripod monument formerly topped by a rotating solid gold statue of President Niyazov (relocated in 2010); the massive Ashgabat Constitution Monument; the twin gold Bank of Astana cylindrical towers; and Ashgabat International Airport, designed as a giant white marble falcon. The city's cultural symbolism is deeply tied to the elaborate Turkmen carpet weaving tradition β the Turkmen carpet star (gul) motif is featured in gilded ornamentation on nearly every marble facade, and the medallions on the National Flag of Turkmenistan themselves reference the five major carpet weaving traditions of the country. At night, the city's marble buildings are illuminated in a coordinated LED light show that cycles through brilliant colours, transforming the entire skyline into an animated coloured light display. Ashgabat remains one of the least-visited capital cities in the world, with only approximately 8,000-12,000 international tourists per year due to strict Turkmen visa regulations. But those who make it there find one of the most visually extraordinary cities on Earth β a Silk Road city that has been entirely rebuilt in white marble in a single generation. Standing on Nurzhol Boulevard at 9 PM in October, watching hundreds of thousands of tonnes of Italian Carrara marble cycle through spectacular colours against the desert night sky, is one of the most surreal urban experiences on the planet.
