π¨π₯ Paint the Door to Hell burning at sunset β Darvaza gas crater in the Karakum Desert
The extraordinary 1971 Soviet-era natural gas crater with its massive 70-metre-wide 30-metre-deep circular crater filled with dancing warm gold, coral and blazing crimson gas flames burning against a sky of blazing crimson, magenta and molten orange sunset creating a spectacular double-fire effect between the earthly flames of the crater and the fiery sunset above. Brilliant warm gold and coral gas flames dancing inside the crater matching the burning sky above. Warm ochre and rust crater rim glowing brilliant coral in the last light. Deep purple shadow settling into the desert dune valleys. Vast warm ochre and gold Karakum desert sand dunes stretching to the horizon catching brilliant coral and gold sunset light. Warm silhouette of a lone desert photographer standing at the crater rim silhouetted dramatically against the burning sky and crater flames. Darvaza at sunset is Turkmenistan at its most infernal and most surreal β the postcard shot of the Karakum Desert, and one of the most photographed accidents in industrial history. And it is your painting.
Drive out from Ashgabat. Walk to the crater rim as the sun drops. Let the brush find the crimson. Paint it on your iPad or print it and paint on canvas β both are included.

β¨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
The Darvaza gas crater β nicknamed the "Door to Hell" or the "Gates of Hell" β sits in the middle of the vast Karakum Desert in central Turkmenistan, roughly 260 kilometres north of the capital Ashgabat, near the small village of Darvaza (population approximately 350). The crater is 70 metres wide and 30 metres deep and has been burning continuously since 1971 β over 55 years without extinction. The origin story is one of the most extraordinary industrial mishaps in modern history, though it should be noted that many of the specific details are disputed by geologists and Soviet-era records. The most commonly told account is this: in 1971, a Soviet geological exploration team was drilling for natural gas in the Karakum Desert when their drilling equipment unexpectedly struck an enormous underground natural gas cavern. The ground collapsed beneath the drilling rig, and the entire rig fell into a newly-formed massive sinkhole. To their credit, no Soviet workers were killed in the collapse. But the sinkhole immediately began releasing enormous quantities of methane gas into the surrounding desert β and the Soviet team, worried about the effect on the local population and livestock, decided to set fire to the escaping gas. Their assumption was that all the gas would burn off within a few weeks, and the crater would then be safe. Instead, the crater has been burning continuously for over 55 years. It shows no signs of running out of fuel. The Turkmen government has repeatedly attempted to extinguish or seal the crater β most recently in 2010, when President Berdymukhamedov ordered geologists to find a way to close it down β and every attempt has failed. In 2022, the current Turkmen President Serdar Berdymukhamedov ordered a renewed effort to permanently extinguish the crater, citing environmental concerns and lost natural gas revenue, but as of recent reporting the crater continues to burn. Some geological researchers have disputed the 1971 origin story, arguing that the crater may not have formed until the 1980s, that it may not have been ignited by Soviet geologists at all, and that the original story may be a later mythologisation. Whatever its true origin, the burning crater has become one of the most photographed natural phenomena in Central Asia. Turkmenistan has one of the largest proven natural gas reserves in the world β an estimated 19.5 trillion cubic metres, the fourth-largest reserves in the world β and gas seeps naturally through many parts of the Karakum Desert. The site was formally designated a nature reserve in 2013. Because the Karakum Desert is one of the darkest places in Central Asia (the nearest large city is 260 kilometres away), the burning crater is visible from great distances at night, and photographers from around the world travel here specifically to photograph it under the Milky Way. In recent years, adventurous travellers have begun overnight camping at safe distances from the crater rim, and international BASE jumper George Kourounis became the first person to descend into the crater on a tether in 2013 to sample the extremophile bacteria living inside the burning cavity. Standing at the crater rim at 8 PM in late September, watching 55 years of unstoppable subterranean fire dance in a 70-metre circular hole under the darkening desert sky, is one of the most surreal experiences on Earth.
