π¨π° Paint the crown jewel of western Ukraine β Lviv Old Town rooftops from the High Castle at golden hour
The historic UNESCO World Heritage medieval Old Town of Lviv, Ukraine with its extraordinary sea of warm terracotta clay tile rooftops stretching across the old city glowing brilliant coral and gold in the last light against a burning amber sky. Warm cream, coral pink, buttercream yellow and mint green Baroque and Renaissance townhouse facades peeking between the rooftops. The iconic 1360 warm cream stone Latin Cathedral with its distinctive Gothic spires rising above the rooftops in the middle distance. The elegant Baroque Bernardine Church tower rising nearby. The warm cream Dominican Church cupola catching sunset gold. Dense green mature trees framing the composition. Distant warm coral Carpathian foothills in soft silhouette on the horizon. Lviv Old Town at golden hour is Ukraine at its most soulful and most storied β the postcard shot of Galicia, and one of the great preserved medieval cities of Central Europe. And it is your painting.
Climb the High Castle path. Look out across 700 years of rooftops. Let the brush find the coral. Paint it on your iPad or print it and paint on canvas β both are included.

β¨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
Lviv β known historically in Polish as LwΓ³w, in German as Lemberg, in Yiddish as Lemberik, and in Russian as Lvov β sits in the historic Galician region of western Ukraine, roughly 70 kilometres from the Polish border. The city was founded in 1256 by King Danylo of Halych (Danylo Romanovych), a ruler of the medieval Kingdom of Galicia-Volhynia, and was named after his eldest son Lev I of Galicia β literally, "the city of Lev." For the next 700 years, Lviv would sit at the geographical crossroads of Central Europe, changing hands between competing empires more times than almost any other major European city. The medieval Rus' principality of Galicia-Volhynia ruled Lviv until 1349, when it was conquered by Casimir III the Great of Poland and incorporated into the Kingdom of Poland. Under Polish rule from 1349 to 1772, Lviv became one of the great trading cities of Central Europe, situated on the major trade route connecting the Baltic Sea with the Black Sea. The city's guilds prospered β Armenian, Jewish, German, Polish, Ruthenian, and Italian merchants all established substantial trading houses within the medieval walled city, and Lviv developed the multicultural, multi-religious, multi-lingual character that would define it for the next four centuries. In 1772, following the First Partition of Poland, Lviv was annexed by the Austrian Habsburg Empire and became the capital of the Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria β an Austrian crown land β for the next 146 years. Under Habsburg rule, Lviv underwent a spectacular architectural transformation. The city walls were dismantled, wide boulevards were laid out in the fashionable Viennese style, and dozens of magnificent Neo-Classical, Baroque, Renaissance, and Art Nouveau buildings were constructed across the old town by leading Austrian and Polish architects. By the late 19th century, Lviv had become one of the most beautiful and cosmopolitan cities in Central Europe, with a diverse population of Poles, Ukrainians, Jews, Germans, and Armenians. The historic Old Town β inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998 β preserves one of the most remarkable concentrations of Central European Baroque, Renaissance and Art Nouveau architecture surviving anywhere. The medieval Rynok Square (Market Square) β the beating heart of the Old Town β is surrounded by 44 exquisite Renaissance and Baroque townhouses, many of which retain their original 16th-17th century facades. The 1360 Latin Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary β Lviv's oldest surviving church β stands in the western corner of the Old Town, its Gothic spires visible from every rooftop viewpoint in the city. Nearby stands the Armenian Cathedral (built in the 14th century, one of the oldest Armenian churches outside Armenia), the Baroque Bernardine Church and Monastery (1600-1630), the Dominican Church (1749-1764), and dozens of other medieval and Baroque religious buildings representing every major Christian denomination and Judaism. The High Castle Hill (Zamkova Hora, elevation 413 metres) β the traditional viewpoint over the Old Town β rises directly above the historic city and offers the classic panoramic view of the sea of terracotta rooftops that has been photographed and painted by artists for over 400 years. During the 20th century, Lviv changed hands and languages once again: from Austria-Hungary to interwar Poland (1918-1939), to the Soviet Union (1939-1991), and finally to independent Ukraine (1991-present). Today it remains the cultural and educational capital of western Ukraine β home to Ukraine's oldest university (Lviv University, founded 1661), the Lviv National Opera, and one of the largest and most active theatre scenes in Eastern Europe. Since Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine, Lviv has become a critical humanitarian and cultural refuge for displaced Ukrainians from eastern regions, and its preservation of medieval and Baroque architecture has taken on renewed cultural significance. Standing at the High Castle overlook at golden hour on a September afternoon, watching 700 years of terracotta rooftops catch fire in the last light while Gothic Latin Cathedral spires rise against the burning amber Carpathian sky, is one of the most soulful urban landscape experiences in Central Europe.
