π¨π΅ Paint the most cinematic landscape in America β Monument Valley mittens at sunset
The massive 300-metre-tall warm rust-red and coral sandstone East and West Mitten Buttes with distinctive thumb-like spires in bold silhouette catching brilliant coral and gold highlights against a sky of blazing crimson, magenta and molten orange. Warm rust-red desert floor stretching to the horizon in the foreground. Deep purple shadow settling into the base of the buttes. Distant Merrick Butte rising in warm silhouette in the middle distance. Warm silhouettes of a lone Navajo rider on horseback crossing the desert floor. Monument Valley at sunset is Utah at its most legendary and most cinematic β the postcard shot of the American Southwest, and the greatest movie set on Earth. And it is your painting.
Drive Highway 163 into the valley. Watch the mittens catch fire. Let the brush find the rust. Paint it on your iPad or print it and paint on canvas β both are included.

β¨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
Monument Valley β known in the Navajo language as TsΓ© Bii' Ndzisgaii, meaning "valley of the rocks" β straddles the border between southern Utah and northern Arizona on the Colorado Plateau, entirely within the Navajo Nation reservation. The valley covers 372 square kilometres and contains dozens of massive sandstone buttes and mesas rising 300 to 400 metres from the desert floor. The East and West Mitten Buttes β the iconic thumbs-up formations visible in every cinematic image of the valley β are the most photographed rock formations in North America. They are made of Cutler Group sandstone, deposited roughly 270 million years ago during the Permian period and progressively eroded over the last 50 million years to their present shape. The valley has been continuously inhabited by the Navajo people (DinΓ©) for at least 500 years, and remains inhabited by roughly 300 Navajo families today, most of whom raise sheep and Navajo Churro goats and offer guided tours to visitors. The valley's cinematic fame began in 1938, when Hollywood director John Ford first travelled to Monument Valley to scout locations for his film Stagecoach (1939), starring an unknown young actor named John Wayne. Ford was so struck by the landscape that he returned to shoot nine more films at Monument Valley over the next 25 years, including My Darling Clementine (1946), Fort Apache (1948), She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949), Rio Grande (1950), The Searchers (1956), and Cheyenne Autumn (1964). Ford's collaboration with the local Navajo community β hiring hundreds of Navajo residents as extras, translators, and craftspeople β became the economic foundation of Monument Valley tourism and dramatically shifted the visual language of Hollywood Westerns forever. After Ford, the valley appeared in Forrest Gump (1994), Back to the Future Part III (1990), Thelma & Louise (1991), Mission: Impossible II (2000), Transformers (2007), National Lampoon's Vacation (1983), and dozens of other films and television series. In 1958, the Navajo Nation established Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park β 373 square kilometres of protected land managed entirely by the Navajo Nation Department of Parks and Recreation, making it one of the first indigenously-owned and operated tribal parks in the United States. Roughly 400,000 visitors travel to Monument Valley every year. The 27-kilometre Valley Drive β the unpaved scenic loop through the heart of the valley β takes visitors past 11 named formations, including the Mittens, Merrick Butte, John Ford Point (where John Ford supposedly directed many of his most famous shots), the Three Sisters, and Totem Pole. Standing at the John Ford Point overlook at sunset while a lone Navajo horseman crosses the valley floor 300 metres below, watching 270-million-year-old sandstone monuments catch fire against a Southwest sky, is one of the most legendary landscape experiences on Earth.
