✨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
The Salar de Uyuni is what remains of a chain of prehistoric lakes — Lake Minchin and Lake Tauca — that covered much of the southwestern Bolivian altiplano tens of thousands of years ago. When those ancient lakes evaporated, they left behind a salt crust up to 10 metres thick and roughly 10,582 square kilometres across, sitting on top of one of the largest lithium reserves in the world — an estimated 50 to 70 percent of the planet's supply. The Aymara and Quechua communities who have lived on the edge of the salar for centuries harvest the salt by hand, piling it into small conical mounds to dry in the altiplano sun. Between December and April, a thin layer of rainwater sits perfectly still on the salt, and the entire flat turns into a mirror so precise that pilots use it to calibrate satellites. NASA calls it the flattest place on Earth — its elevation varies by less than one metre across the whole plain. Stand out on the salt at sunset, and you are standing on the sky.
