β¨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
Registan Square in the historic centre of Samarkand, Uzbekistan is one of the finest architectural ensembles in the entire Islamic world and one of the greatest achievements of Persian-Timurid architecture anywhere on Earth. The name "Registan" translates from Persian as "sandy place" β the plaza was originally a sandy trading crossroads and public gathering place in medieval Samarkand, where royal proclamations were read, public executions were held, and Silk Road merchants gathered. Registan Square was progressively transformed into its current magnificent form under three successive rulers of the Timurid dynasty and its successors. The first madrasah β the Ulugh Beg Madrasah on the western side β was built between 1417 and 1420 under the personal supervision of Ulugh Beg, the grandson of the great Central Asian conqueror Timur (Tamerlane) and one of the most extraordinary astronomer-mathematicians of the medieval Islamic world. Ulugh Beg was a genuine polymath ruler β he wrote a star catalogue documenting the positions of 1,018 stars with unprecedented accuracy (the most accurate star catalogue produced anywhere in the world between the ancient Alexandrians and the invention of the telescope in the 1600s), calculated the length of the solar year to within 25 seconds of the modern value, and personally taught mathematics and astronomy at the madrasah he founded. The Sher-Dor Madrasah on the eastern side was built between 1619 and 1636 by the Bukhara Khanate ruler Yalangtush Bakhodur β deliberately as a mirror image of the older Ulugh Beg Madrasah opposite. The Sher-Dor is famous for its extraordinary and religiously unusual mosaic depictions above the entrance portal: two golden Persian lions (sher in Persian) chasing white deer, with rising suns bearing human faces on their backs. These figurative representations of animals and humans directly contradict the traditional Islamic prohibition on depicting living creatures in religious art β an aesthetic risk that reflects the confident heterodoxy of 17th-century Bukhara Khanate rulers. The Tilya-Kori Madrasah in the centre β literally "Gilded with Gold" β was built between 1646 and 1660 by the same Yalangtush Bakhodur to complete the three-madrasah ensemble. The Tilya-Kori was designed as a large teaching madrasah with student living cells around a central courtyard, but its northern side houses one of the most spectacular mosques in Central Asia: the Tilya-Kori congregational mosque. The mosque interior is entirely gilded β approximately five kilograms of pure gold leaf was applied to the interior ceiling, mihrab prayer niche, and elaborate Islamic geometric decoration during the original 17th-century construction, and the interior was restored and re-gilded again by Soviet restorers between 1979 and 1990. The gold leaf covers a ceiling painted with an intricate geometric pattern representing the celestial dome and the divine order of the universe β a common motif in Persian and Timurid mosque architecture designed to evoke the cosmos itself as the ultimate house of worship. The elaborate cobalt-blue and turquoise Persian mosaic tile walls, the ornate warm gold mihrab prayer niche pointing toward Mecca, and the delicate Persian floral fresco patterns covering every arch and column top all reflect the peak of Timurid-Bukhara aesthetic sophistication. Registan Square as a whole was inscribed as part of the "Samarkand β Crossroad of Cultures" UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001. Samarkand itself is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities on Earth β founded in approximately the 7th century BC (over 2,700 years ago), it served as the capital of Timur's vast 14th-century empire that stretched from India to Anatolia. Standing quietly inside the Tilya-Kori mosque at 4 PM on an October afternoon, looking up at five kilograms of pure gold leaf catching warm afternoon sunlight streaming through cobalt-blue mosaic windows onto a marble floor where Silk Road worshippers have prayed for 370 years, is one of the most sacred and unforgettable interior architectural experiences on the entire Asian continent.
