π¨βοΈ Paint the most breathtaking aerial view in the world - looking down from Michelangelo's dome over St Peter's Square
You climb 551 steps. The staircase narrows. You lean at an angle against the curved walls. And then you step out at the top β and the entire world opens below you. St Peter's Square spreads far beneath, Bernini's colonnade arms curving wide, the Egyptian obelisk tiny at the centre, Rome stretching to every horizon, the Tiber River glinting to the left. This is the view Michelangelo designed - and he was 71 years old when he did it. This is your painting.
Take a breath. Let the brush go down from the heights. Paint it on your iPad or print it and paint on canvas β both are included.

β¨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
The dome of St Peter's Basilica was designed by Michelangelo in 1546, when he was appointed chief architect of the basilica at the age of 71. He worked on it until his death in 1564 - it was completed in 1590 by his student Giacomo della Porta. At 136 metres high, it was the tallest building in Rome for centuries and remains the tallest dome in the world. Michelangelo based its proportions on the Pantheon, which he called the most perfect building ever made. The colonnade below was designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini in the 1660s β its 284 Doric columns and 140 statues of saints were built to create the theatrical effect of the Church's arms reaching out to embrace the world. Looking down from the dome, you see both visions at once - Michelangelo's above, Bernini's below β across four centuries of genius. βοΈ
