π¨π Paint the eastern end of Russia over the Pacific horizon β Vladivostok Golden Bridge from the hills
The iconic 2012 modernist warm cream and coral steel cable-stayed suspension bridge with distinctive tall tapered twin cream pylons and dramatic fan pattern of warm silver support cables spanning the Golden Horn Bay of Vladivostok rising against a burning amber sky. Warm cream bridge pylons glowing brilliant coral and gold in the last light. Warm silver cables catching brilliant coral highlights. The wide silver-blue Pacific Ocean Golden Horn Bay in the middle distance reflecting the fiery sunset in shimmering gold, coral and magenta reflections. Warm cream and coral Vladivostok city skyline of Soviet-era apartment blocks and modern high-rises visible on both sides of the bay catching sunset warmth. Warm ochre and green forested hills of the Russian Far East in the foreground catching brilliant coral highlights. Warm silhouettes of a Russian couple at a hillside viewpoint watching the sunset. Distant Sea of Japan visible in the middle distance in warm coral silhouette. The Golden Bridge is Russia at its most far-flung and most spectacular β the postcard shot of the Russian Pacific, and the end of the world's longest railway. And it is your painting.
Climb the Eagle's Nest Hill. Watch the bay catch fire. Let the brush find the coral. Paint it on your iPad or print it and paint on canvas β both are included.

β¨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
Vladivostok β a name that translates from Russian literally as "Ruler of the East" (Vlad-i-vostok, from vladet, "to rule," and vostok, "the east") β sits on a natural harbour at the southern tip of the Russian Far East, on the Sea of Japan just 130 kilometres from the Chinese border and 60 kilometres from the North Korean border. Vladivostok is Russia's largest Pacific port city and the eastern terminus of the Trans-Siberian Railway β the end of the longest railway line on Earth, 9,289 kilometres from Moscow. The city was founded on July 2, 1860, as a Russian naval outpost by a small expedition led by Lieutenant Nikolai Komarov of the Imperial Russian Navy. The site had been ceded to Russia just months earlier by the Qing Dynasty of China in the 1860 Convention of Peking, which transferred the vast Priamurye and Primorye territories (approximately 1 million square kilometres of what is now the Russian Far East) from Chinese to Russian sovereignty. Vladivostok's natural harbour β the Golden Horn Bay (Zolotoy Rog Bay, named after the similarly-shaped Golden Horn inlet in Istanbul that had inspired the Russian naval commanders) β was recognised immediately as one of the finest natural deep-water ice-free harbours in all of the Russian Pacific coast, and construction of naval facilities and the city began within months of the initial expedition. The 1904-1905 Russo-Japanese War made painfully clear to Russian imperial military planners that Vladivostok was dangerously isolated from the rest of the Russian Empire, and the completion of the Trans-Siberian Railway to Vladivostok in 1904-1916 finally provided the essential rail connection that Russia needed. Throughout the 20th century, Vladivostok served as the home port of the Soviet Pacific Fleet β one of the four major fleets of the Soviet Navy β and the entire city was closed to all foreign visitors between 1958 and 1991 for security reasons. Vladivostok only reopened to foreign travellers in 1991 following the collapse of the Soviet Union. The Zolotoy Most (Golden Bridge) β the extraordinary modernist suspension bridge that has become the definitive symbol of contemporary Vladivostok β was constructed between 2008 and 2012 to solve a chronic traffic problem: the Golden Horn Bay divides central Vladivostok into two halves separated by 1.4 kilometres of water, and before 2012, travelling between the two halves of the city required a lengthy detour around the entire bay via ferry or a 20-kilometre inland loop. The bridge was designed by the Russian engineering firm NPO Mostovik, features two dramatic 226-metre-tall tapered concrete pylons supporting a fan pattern of 68 warm silver support cables, and spans a total length of 1,388 metres. When it opened on September 1, 2012, in time for the September 2012 APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) summit hosted by Vladivostok, the Golden Bridge became the longest cable-stayed suspension bridge in Russia and one of the longest in the world. Its distinctive fan-pattern silhouette against the Pacific sunset has since become the definitive image of contemporary Vladivostok. Vladivostok holds special cultural significance in Russian imperial and Soviet-era literature as "the beginning" (or, from the western perspective, "the end") of Russia β the eastern edge of the vast Russian world, 9 time zones and 9,289 kilometres from Moscow. Vladivostok sits at approximately the same latitude as Marseille (France) and Boston (USA), yet feels culturally and geographically as remote from Europe as it is possible to be while still remaining in Europe. The famous Russian pop song "Vladivostok 2000" by Mumiy Troll (released 1997) captures the city's sense of eastern isolation, Pacific-facing identity, and independent character that distinguishes it sharply from western Russian cities like Moscow and St Petersburg. Standing on the Eagle's Nest Hill viewpoint (Sopka Orlinoe Gnezdo) β the traditional panoramic viewpoint over the Golden Horn Bay β at 7 PM on a September evening, watching the warm silver cables of the Golden Bridge catch coral sunset light while the Pacific Ocean burns beyond the harbour in the distance, is to look directly at the eastern end of Russia β the point where the Trans-Siberian Railway meets the sea, and where the vast Russian world quietly ends.
