π¨πΌ Paint the icon of the Pacific Northwest, the iconic tower at dawn over misty Seattle
The massive 184-metre-tall 1962 futuristic observation tower with its distinctive white flying-saucer top rising against a deep cobalt dawn sky. Warm pink and coral light just beginning to touch the top of the observation deck in the first alpenglow. Silver Puget Sound morning mist curling low across the Seattle Center plaza in the foreground. The Seattle downtown skyline emerging softly from the fog in warm silhouette. Warm cobblestone plaza catching the first pink light. Distant Elliott Bay barely visible in the mist. Warm silhouettes of an early morning jogger. The tower at dawn is Washington at its most soulful and most cinematic β the postcard shot of the Evergreen State, and the quiet moment when Seattle belongs to no one. And it is your painting.
Walk under the tower at first light. Watch the mist come off the Sound. Let the brush find the pink. Paint it on your iPad or print it and paint on canvas β both are included.

β¨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
This iconic tower stands at Seattle Center in the Queen Anne neighbourhood of Seattle, Washington, roughly one kilometre north of downtown. It was designed and constructed as the centrepiece of the 1962 World's Fair β officially the Century 21 Exposition β held in Seattle from April 21 to October 21, 1962. The theme of the fair was "Man in the Space Age" β a Cold War-era celebration of American technological ambition, largely in response to the Soviet Union's Sputnik launch of 1957 and the subsequent space race. The design of this iconic tower originated in a hotel napkin sketch. Edward E. Carlson, the President of the World's Fair Commission, sketched a rough concept of a tall tower topped with a flying-saucer-shaped restaurant on a coffee-shop napkin in 1959. Architects John Graham & Company and Victor Steinbrueck refined the concept into the final design over the next two years. Construction began on April 17, 1961, with the digging of a 9-metre-deep foundation hole that was filled with 5,850 tonnes of concrete β one of the largest continuous concrete pours in the history of the American West. The three massive tapered white steel legs rise from that foundation. Total height: 184 metres. Total weight: 9,550 tonnes. Total cost: $4.5 million (roughly $46 million in today's dollars). Completed in December 1961, just four months before the World's Fair opened. The distinctive flying-saucer top houses the observation deck at 158 metres and a restaurant at 152 metres β the world's first revolving restaurant on top of a public observation tower, which completes one full 360-degree rotation every 47 minutes. This tower can withstand winds up to 320 km/h and earthquakes up to magnitude 9.1 β engineered specifically to survive the Cascadia subduction zone, one of the most seismically active regions on Earth. During the 1962 World's Fair, over 2.3 million people rode the elevators to the observation deck in six months. Since then, this tower has hosted state visits from monarchs including Queen Elizabeth II, world leaders including Nikita Khrushchev, and countless celebrities including Elvis Presley, who filmed the 1963 movie It Happened at the World's Fair on location. This tower underwent a $100 million renovation completed in 2018, which replaced the original observation deck floor and railings with all-glass panels β including the famous rotating glass floor called The Loupe β the only revolving glass floor in the world. It was named a City of Seattle Landmark in 1999 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2016 β remarkable recognition for a building barely 60 years old. This tower is the most recognisable structure in the Pacific Northwest and hosts over 1.3 million visitors annually. The Seattle Center campus surrounding it β the 74-acre former World's Fair grounds β is also home to the Museum of Pop Culture (designed by Frank Gehry), the Chihuly Garden and Glass museum, the Pacific Science Center, and Climate Pledge Arena. Standing on the empty plaza at 6:30 AM on a September morning, with Puget Sound mist curling around the base of the three tapered legs and pink dawn light beginning to touch a 60-year-old flying saucer shape floating 158 metres in the sky, is one of the sweetest views in the entire American West.
