π¨π Paint one of the great engineering wonders of America β the New River Gorge Bridge illuminated in the Appalachian night
The massive 924-metre-long steel arch bridge with warm rust-brown weathered steel arch glowing warm amber and gold from dramatic uplighting against a deep indigo starry sky. The vast gorge below in dark silhouette. Warm gold reflections shimmering across the still silver-blue New River far below. Dense dark Appalachian forest cascading down the gorge walls with subtle warm autumn tones visible in the moonlight. Warm silhouettes of a small group of visitors on the observation deck watching the illuminated bridge. Silver moonlight touching the arch. The New River Gorge Bridge at night is West Virginia at its most dramatic and most monumental β the postcard shot of the Mountain State, and the greatest steel arch in America. And it is your painting.
Stand on the observation deck at midnight. Watch the arch glow amber. Let the brush find the gold. Paint it on your iPad or print it and paint on canvas β both are included.

β¨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
The New River Gorge Bridge spans the New River in Fayette County, southern West Virginia, roughly 8 kilometres north of the town of Fayetteville, in the heart of the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve β the newest and 63rd U.S. National Park, designated by Congress in December 2020. The bridge is one of the most spectacular pieces of infrastructure engineering ever built in the United States. Construction began in June 1974 and was completed on October 22, 1977, after 39 months of work at a total cost of $37 million (roughly $190 million today). The bridge is 924 metres long from abutment to abutment. The central steel arch β the defining architectural feature β spans 518 metres and rises 267 metres above the New River at the deepest point of the gorge. At the time of its completion, it was the longest single-span steel arch bridge in the world (a record it held for 26 years until being surpassed in 2003 by China's Lupu Bridge), and it remains the third-longest single-span steel arch bridge in the world today. The bridge deck sits 267 metres above the New River β making it, at the time of completion, the highest vehicular bridge in the world. It remains the third-highest bridge in the United States today. The bridge is constructed entirely of a special type of atmospheric-corrosion-resistant weathering steel called Cor-Ten β designed by U.S. Steel β which forms a natural rust-coloured patina layer on its surface that then protects the underlying steel from further oxidation. This is the same steel used in the sculptures of Richard Serra and countless outdoor architectural projects, and it is why the New River Gorge Bridge has its distinctive warm rust-brown colour rather than the traditional painted grey or green of most American steel bridges. Total weight of steel used: over 80,000 tonnes. Before the bridge was built, driving across the New River Gorge took approximately 40 minutes and 40 kilometres of winding two-lane roads down into the gorge and back up the other side. The bridge cut the crossing to under 60 seconds. Every year on the third Saturday in October β Bridge Day β the West Virginia Department of Highways closes the bridge to vehicular traffic and opens it to the public. On Bridge Day, hundreds of BASE jumpers legally parachute from the bridge deck 267 metres to the gorge below, thousands of rappellers descend the arch on ropes, and roughly 100,000 to 200,000 spectators fill the observation decks and lookouts. Bridge Day is one of the largest extreme-sports events in the world and one of only a handful of days per year when BASE jumping is fully legal in the United States. The New River itself is, despite its name, one of the oldest rivers on the North American continent β geologists estimate it is between 65 and 320 million years old, making it possibly the second-oldest river in the world after the Nile. It flows northward through the Appalachian Plateau, cutting the gorge over hundreds of millions of years of erosion. The gorge itself is roughly 800 metres deep and 65 kilometres long, and hosts world-class whitewater rafting on the Class IIIβV rapids of the Lower Gorge. The New River Gorge National Park and Preserve covers 292 square kilometres of protected land and draws over 1.6 million visitors annually. Standing on the Canyon Rim Boardwalk observation deck at midnight on a clear October evening, watching 80,000 tonnes of Cor-Ten steel glow amber 267 metres above one of the oldest rivers on Earth, is to look directly at the marriage of Appalachian geology and American engineering.
