A majestic humpback whale breaching dramatically out of the Pacific Ocean at sunset. A massive warm charcoal-grey and warm cream humpback whale with distinctive brilliant warm cream underside and impressive massive pectoral fins launching magnificently out of the ocean in a spectacular full breach with cascading silver-white water spray flying dramatically against a burning coral and magenta sunset sky. Warm charcoal-grey and warm chestnut-brown humpback whale skin catching brilliant coral and gold sunset warmth in exquisite detail with beautiful visible texture. Brilliant warm cream-white whale underside and belly catching brilliant coral highlights. Warm charcoal-grey whale eye catching brilliant amber highlights. Brilliant warm cream massive whale pectoral fins spread dramatically catching sunset warmth. Cascading brilliant silver-white and cream ocean water spray flying spectacularly through the air in warm sunset light in exquisite detail. Brilliant warm silver-blue and cobalt Pacific Ocean waves in the foreground catching brilliant coral sunset reflections in shimmering coral, gold and magenta reflections. Brilliant warm gold and coral horizon burning with brilliant sunset colour. Warm silhouettes of distant humpback whale tail flukes breaching in the middle distance. Warm silhouette of a small warm cream and coral fishing boat with fishermen watching in awe on the horizon. Warm silhouettes of Pacific seagulls flying dramatically catching first sunset light. The humpback whale breaching at sunset is the ocean itself β 30 tonnes of pure joy defying gravity, and the beating gentle heart of the Pacific. And it is your painting.
Watch from the boat rail. Wait for the tail flukes. Let the brush find the coral. Paint it on your iPad or print it and paint on canvas β both are included.

β¨ A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THIS INCREDIBLE ANIMAL
The humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) is one of the most beloved, most acrobatic, and most extraordinary large mammals anywhere on Earth. Adult humpback whales measure 14-17 metres in total length from nose to tail-fluke and weigh approximately 25-40 metric tonnes β an extraordinary body mass that ranks the humpback among the largest animals ever to have lived on planet Earth (though several other whale species β the blue whale, the fin whale, and the North Pacific right whale β are larger). The species inhabits every major ocean basin on Earth and undertakes some of the most extraordinary annual migrations of any animal species anywhere in the world. Humpback whales are famous for their extraordinary acrobatic behaviour β particularly the spectacular "breach" in which a full adult humpback launches its entire massive body up to 20 metres out of the ocean and falls back to the surface with a spectacular explosion of ocean spray. Adult humpbacks breach for reasons that marine biologists still do not fully understand. Working hypotheses include social communication with distant whales (a full breach creates a low-frequency acoustic signal audible underwater for over 10 kilometres), parasite removal (the impact of the breach dislodges barnacles and whale lice from the whale's skin), courtship display during breeding season, calf training exercises, and possibly (most tantalisingly) pure joy and play. Individual humpback whales have been documented breaching dozens of consecutive times within a single afternoon β a level of sustained physical activity that has no clear survival explanation and strongly suggests genuine recreational behaviour. The humpback whale's most iconic anatomical feature is its extraordinarily long warm cream-white pectoral fins. Adult humpback pectoral fins measure approximately 5 metres long β the longest pectoral fins of any whale species, comprising up to one-third of the whale's total body length. The scientific species name "Megaptera" literally means "great winged one" in Ancient Greek β a reference to these spectacular pectoral fins that give the humpback whale the appearance of an underwater angel in flight. The distinctive knobbly bumps on the humpback's head and jaw (called "tubercles") each contain a single sensitive hair follicle and function as sensory organs to help the whale locate and coordinate group hunting behaviour in dark ocean depths. Humpback whales are famous for their extraordinary vocal communication. Adult male humpback whales produce elaborate "songs" β complex sequences of low-frequency underwater vocalisations that can last for 30 minutes to over 24 hours and can travel through ocean water for over 30 kilometres. Individual song sequences have been documented to be shared and gradually modified across entire breeding populations of humpback whales over multi-year periods β a form of cultural learning and cultural evolution that is exceptionally rare in the non-human animal world. Humpback whale songs are among the most extensively studied non-human animal vocalisations in the entire scientific literature. Humpback whales are extraordinary migratory travellers. Individual whales undertake annual round-trip migrations covering approximately 8,000-16,000 kilometres per year, moving between summer feeding grounds in cold polar and subpolar waters (Alaska, Antarctica, northern Norway, Iceland) and winter breeding/calving grounds in warm tropical waters (Hawaii, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, northeastern Australia, Madagascar, Tonga). The species performs some of the longest-documented annual migrations of any mammal species anywhere in the natural world. Humpback whales are baleen whales rather than toothed whales. They feed by lunging through massive concentrations of small schooling fish (herring, capelin, sand lance, mackerel), krill, and other small crustaceans β swallowing enormous mouthfuls of prey-laden seawater and then filtering out the water through their elaborate baleen plate structures. An adult humpback consumes approximately 1,500-2,500 kilograms of prey per day during the summer feeding season, storing enough body fat reserves during the summer to sustain the entire winter breeding season without significant additional feeding. Humpback whales have exhibited one of the most sophisticated documented cases of collaborative group hunting in the entire mammalian world: "bubble net feeding." In this elaborate collective hunting strategy, groups of 2-12 whales work together to trap dense schools of small fish by swimming in a spiral pattern beneath the fish while blowing a rising cylinder of exhaled bubbles that traps the fish in a compact column, at which point the coordinated group simultaneously lunges upward with open mouths to swallow the concentrated prey. This behaviour requires extraordinary coordination, individual role assignment, and multi-year social learning β capacities that place humpback whales among the most intelligent species of any non-human mammal. The humpback whale's conservation history is one of the greatest wildlife recovery stories in world history. Between 1900 and 1966, industrial commercial whaling killed an estimated 200,000 humpback whales worldwide β reducing global populations from an estimated 125,000-plus individuals to approximately 5,000 individuals by 1966. The International Whaling Commission's 1966 international ban on commercial humpback whaling (later extended to a full moratorium on commercial whaling in 1986) enabled one of the most successful large-mammal population recoveries in world history. Humpback whale populations have now recovered to over 135,000 individuals globally β approaching pre-industrial levels. Most humpback whale populations were formally removed from the endangered species list between 2010 and 2020. Standing on the deck of a small whale-watching boat off the Big Island of Hawaii, the coast of Alaska, or the Baja California peninsula of Mexico at 5:45 PM on a warm February evening, watching a 30-tonne humpback whale launch its full body out of the Pacific and crash back into the ocean with a spectacular explosion of silver-white water spray while brilliant coral sunset light burns across the horizon, is one of the most transcendent and joyful wildlife experiences anywhere on Earth.
