πŸŽ¨β„οΈ Paint one of the rarest natural spectacles in America β€” the Apostle Islands ice caves on frozen Lake Superior The massive warm cream and rust-red sandstone cliff walls of the mainland Apostle Islands National Lakeshore glowing warm coral and gold in the last light against a burning amber winter sky. Spectacular massive cascading turquoise-blue and brilliant white ice formations, ice columns and frozen waterfalls hanging from the cliff faces and inside the sea caves. Brilliant crystalline blue ice glowing translucent from within. Warm cream frozen Lake Superior surface stretching in the foreground with warm silhouettes of a small group of visitors in bright red winter gear approaching the caves for scale. Deep purple shadow settling into the cave recesses. The Apostle Islands ice caves are Wisconsin at its most rare and most magical β€” the postcard shot of the Badger State winter, and a natural spectacle that has only been safely accessible a handful of times in the last two decades. And it is your painting. Walk out across the frozen lake. Enter the ice cathedral. Let the brush find the turquoise. Paint it on your iPad or print it and paint on canvas β€” both are included. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🎨 WHAT YOU GET βœ”οΈ 5 difficulty levels β€” 16, 24, 48, 72 and 96 colors β€” beginner to expert in one download βœ”οΈ 3 outline versions β€” numbered, blank and preview βœ”οΈ SVG + PDF + PNG file formats β€” print at any size without blurring βœ”οΈ Procreate colour swatches β€” drop the palette straight into your iPad βœ”οΈ HEX-coded colour palette on every page βœ”οΈ Instant digital download β€” nothing shipped ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ✨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY The Apostle Islands National Lakeshore covers 274 square kilometres along the northern tip of Wisconsin β€” the Bayfield Peninsula and 21 of the 22 Apostle Islands in Lake Superior. It was established as a national lakeshore in 1970 and is administered by the U.S. National Park Service. The mainland ice caves β€” the specific location of this scene β€” are found along a 25-kilometre stretch of Squaw Bay on the Bayfield Peninsula, about 30 minutes' drive north of the town of Cornucopia, Wisconsin. The caves themselves are actually sea caves β€” hollowed out of ancient Devils Island Formation sandstone by roughly 1.1 billion years of wave erosion during the Middle Proterozoic era. The distinctive banded rust-red and warm cream sandstone was deposited between 1.1 billion and 900 million years ago, making these some of the oldest exposed rocks in the Great Lakes region. The sea caves are accessible year-round by kayak from May to October, but the true magic happens in winter. Every few years, when Lake Superior β€” the largest freshwater lake by surface area in the world at 82,100 square kilometres β€” freezes solid enough to walk on, visitors can hike two miles across the frozen lake to reach the caves. Once inside, they discover a natural ice cathedral: massive turquoise-blue and crystalline white icicles, ice columns and frozen waterfalls cascading from the cliff faces and cave ceilings, formed as groundwater seeps out of the sandstone through the winter and freezes solid. The distinctive turquoise-blue colour of the ice is caused by density: air bubbles are compressed out as the water slowly freezes drop by drop, and the resulting crystal-clear ice absorbs and scatters visible light in the same way ocean water does, revealing brilliant blue tones. Because Lake Superior only freezes solid enough to permit safe access in exceptionally cold winters, the mainland ice caves are only safely accessible a handful of times each decade. Between 2009 and 2019, they were only officially opened by the National Park Service in the winters of 2014 and 2015 β€” during which they drew over 138,000 visitors in a single season and briefly became one of the most-photographed natural wonders in the United States. The winter of 2022 saw them briefly accessible again in February. In warmer winters, the ice caves are entirely off-limits because Lake Superior's ice is too thin and dangerous to cross safely. The rest of the year, the caves remain accessible by kayak β€” a completely different experience of the same rock formations, with the deep blue waters of Lake Superior surrounding the sandstone arches. The Apostle Islands themselves are named after the twelve original islands (which were later found to number 22) β€” first mistakenly given the name by 17th-century French Jesuit missionaries who assumed there were twelve islands, echoing the twelve apostles of Christian scripture. The islands were historically home to the Ojibwe (Anishinaabe) people, whose descendants remain today one of the largest Native American nations in the Great Lakes region β€” the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa maintains a reservation adjacent to the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. Standing on the ice at golden hour on a February afternoon at -20Β°C, walking beneath translucent turquoise ice curtains 15 metres high hanging from a billion-year-old sandstone cliff, is one of the most rare and unforgettable natural experiences on the entire North American continent. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ πŸ“₯ HOW IT WORKS 1.
